Angel Star to Play Superman?

Press reports say television vamp will sink teeth into red cape.

February 28, 2003 - Welcome to the ongoing headache that is covering the casting of Superman.  Just when you thought the news couldn't get stranger comes word from the UK that the hunt for the man who will wear the big blue suit is finally over.

So, is it goodbye fangs and hello Krypton for Angel?  According to UK's Hello Magazine and Daily Express, David Boreanaz, star of The WB's Angel, has signed a three-picture deal to star in three Superman films for Warner Brothers and director Brett Ratner.  If true, the deal would be for over $30 million for the actor's services in the three films. According to the reports, the films may be shooting in Australia.

Calls to Boreanaz's agent and manager for confirmation of the story weren't returned by press time.  If one of television's favorite vampires does hang up the long coat in favor of a long, red cape, he will have beaten out some of Hollywood's young A-list for the part, including Josh Hartnett, That 70's Show star Ashton Kutcher, Jude Law and Brendan Fraser.

According to the UK reports, current plans are for Boreanaz to continue his role in the popular vampire drama while performing his duties as The Man of Steel but with an anticipated mid-2003 start date, that may not be feasible.  So, then, where does that leave Angel? The WB hasn't made a final decision whether or not it will renew the series but if it interferes with the potential revival of one of the studio's flagship franchises, look for the series to leave the schedule.  Without its lead, there would be no chance of the series making the jump to UPN, leaving the rumored spin-off series the only hope for Buffy fans wanting more out of that franchise.

Right. I think this is totally made up rubbish. I hope it is. How would anyone in the UK have the inside skinny on this anyway?

I guess there might be rumour control tomorrow morning, but I think this is just a shot in the dark.

I don't think Boreanaz would be able to pull this off. As much as I love Angel, I don't think his acting is that strong, and going by the risible "Valentine", he hasn't been making great choices so far.

Poll added - Would Angel be a good Man of Steel?

Is he going to slick his hair back and sport that quiff thing? Hehe

Hmm, he could maybe pull it off, but I can't really picture him as Superman.

(Nice picture by the way ;) )

No. Just no. Please, for the love of everything, do not let DB play Superman.

DB is so wooden when he's not being Angelus. It's kinda why I find Angel so boring a character. Sure, he's supposed to be brooding and depressed, but jeeeeeeeeeeeeeez, just every now and then, could you SMILE?

I saw "Valentine" too - very very predictable movie - and I was thinking, through the whole thing, that if Angel wasn't a vampire, he'd be the guy in Valentine - blah blah ---

Nah - cast someone else as Superman.

I'm going for the "maybe he could pull it off" option. I think David is a good actor, he plays Angel well, the way he switches between broody action hero guy and emotionally fragile self-conscious with a sense of humour guy always tickles me.

Mostly - I just don't think it's true -

I don't think that DB becoming Superman is gonna be a problem for Angel - what I'm thinking might be the issue is plotlines / story arcs and viewership --

I still don't think DB could be Superman - I'd have to see him do something else first to make that judgement -

What do you mean?

IF (and that's a really big IF - I really don't think this is going to happen) Boreanaz does become Superman, you have to bear in mind that Superman=Warner Bros property, Angel=WB, so I doubt he would be made to choose between one or the other, it would be in the best interests of the studios to fit the Superman shooting schedule around Angel, or vice versa.

Are you concerned that if this did happen, we would get episodes of Angel without much Angel in? Something like the season six Jack-free SG1 eps? 'Cos that would definitely not be good for continuity - I am pretty sure that long absences for the central character isn't part of Joss's long term plan!

I am slowly beginning to warm to this idea - not that I like it exactly, just getting used to the idea that it *might* be true. I am kind of concerned that there haven't been any hasty denials yet

From scifwire

Boreanaz scotches the rumours:

Boreanaz Denies Super Rumor

Angel star David Boreanaz denied in a chat on E! Online the rumor that he has been cast in the title role of the upcoming Superman movie. "I'll just kill the rumor now?it hasn't happened," Boreanaz said. "I did go in and read for the part, but I can't do it because of my schedule with Angel."

A Warner representative, meanwhile, told the Dark Horizons Web site that no one has yet been cast in the lead.

I wonder if he can't do it because of his scedule with Angel, or because of his not getting the part? ;)

Actually - my comments were more meant for the thread where we were discussing Angel getting the axe - cancelled - the show would get cancelled for bad plot and low viewership before it would get cancelled b/c DB got a part in a movie or something - they'd work around that -

sorry - my brain fired in a million directions at one time in that last post ----
