A Great new Fantasy Novel

I just finished a great new fantasy epic, and wanted to know if anyone else has discovered it...

It's called Gideon's Dawn, by Michael D. Warden (apparently a newcomer to fantasy fiction, since he's not listed among the authors on the Board).

I'm an avid fantasy reader, but it's been along time since I've read something that really knocked my socks off. Gideon's Dawn really hooked me. (I read the whole thing in 3 days--all 520 pages of it!) It's a whole new world, whole new creatures, a whole new kind of magic, and a great story with really interesting characters.

Based on the reviews already posted on Amazon, I know I'm not alone. But I just wanted to spread the word about this new gem, and open a discussion from anyone else who's read the book.

And if you haven't read it, I'd highly recommend you get a copy. Then share with us what you think of it! ;)

Can't say I've heard of either the author or the book.

Sadly Amazon.com does not do a book synopsis, so please come and tell us a little more about it.

More on Gideon's Dawn

Here's a link to a synopsis of Gideon's Dawn on www.sffworld.com:

There's also an excerpt from the book, and an interview of the author, Michael Warden.

A friend of mine who also read the book said it was kind of a DUNE meets LORD OF THE RINGS type saga. I think it's more like The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant by Donaldson, but with more of a GenX sort of edge to it.

On the surface, it's about a messed up grad student named Gideon who gets transported to this mystic world where certain words (languages, really) have the power to both kill and create, and immediately finds himself caught up in an ancient battle between the speakers of two opposing magical languages. Gideon wants no part of any of it, but circumstances force him into a central role of deliverer (or possibly destroyer) in the battle for the future of the world.

The two forces want Gideon to either control or kill Gideon because he demonstrates this powerful magical ability that they haven't seen for thousands of years. But Gideon doesn't believe he has any magical power, and even if he does, he has no idea how to control it. The story carries him on an epic journey to discover the truth about himself and his true role in the fate of this strange (but very cool) world.

To say more would spoil it. But there's a lot more...

Cheers for that! :)

Never a great enthusiast of Dune, but if I see it I might give it a look
