okay, if an MIM did NOT exist...why would neo be allowed to free 23 people to make another zion.

if there is no MIM, then wipe out zion and you have no more resistance.

so i guess what im confused about is why people are even debating whether there is or not...why would the matrix need zion if it wasnt just another level of the matrix?

i just went cross-eyed...someone explain..

let me help :0

Though I am in MIM camp, even if Zion is real, it MUST still exist as an outlet for the 1% (more likely 0.1%) of population which does not accept the programme and needs to be free or at least think they are. Hence being allowed to "unplug" and leave the Matrix. This way the rest of the 99.9% humanity can remain batteries...

But eventually this outlet gets itself actually too dangerous and probability of "defeating" the Machines rises to unacceptable figure (probably something like 0.0001% but Machines would probably consider that too high anyway ;P)

Zion is a necessity of the Matrix as figured out by the "Mother of the Matrix" but whether the Machines created a MIM to facilitate this or merely allow the humans to escape to real world is another question.

I agree with Cersei, that's how it was explained by the Architect.

Zion is necessary, as somewhere for the humans that become aware within the Matrix, to escape to. My problem would be that if the Machines can periodically destroy Zion, and reboot the Matrix, to start over afresh, this whole set up seems far more complicated than necessary:

1/ Why make Zion somewhere than requires months of digging to reach?

2/ Why allow so many free humans to be born in Zion?

(I'm sure that they could engineer the conditions there to begin with to restrict the population growth.)

(Am I correct in thinking that all humans within the Matrix were grown within the Matrix, artificially in those pods? The Machines don't need Zion as a source to harvest humans for the Matrix?)

3/ Why give the free humans the Hovercrafts with which to fight back?

(I expect that without some hope of defeating the machines, or any sense of progress in making Zion stronger, then the humans their would become defeatist and give up the fight.)

thank-you,

that makes a lot more sense to me. of course now it just seems simple that there should be a MIM but then why would they make it so difficult on themselves to destroy it. i actually believe now that the real world IS the real world.

but all any of us can do is wait and see...

hehe they do not make it so difficult to destroy...they could begin tunnelling down anytime. They only wait till the system becomes critical (not sure what this is...prehaps size of Zion exceeds "safety margins")

The whole act of Sentinels digging down is to trigger Neo into "rushing" to the Source where in his haste he can then make the choice of "saving Zion" (ie the 23 new people)

As for allowing so many to be born to Zion, I suspect these are individuals predicted (perhaps by their genetic make-up) to be rebellious and thus might as well deposit their "dreams" direct into Zion instead of wasting additional time destabilising Matrix before they can be freed (if at all). They can then rely on the rebels to free to remaining "doubters" that arise by identifying these people themselves. Ooooh the machines are clever ;)
