I have noticed that in an episode at the start of season 6, SGC command recieved a transmission from SG-1. Before the gate even opened, they recieved it while the gate was dialing. I though it would take years for the frequency to reach earth, when not sending it through the wormhole itself. Anyone have any ideas how this could be?

See my sink explination in I have a theory the stargate stays open lonmger or shorter perhaps the wave wnet through the sending gate before..perhaps the water freeezes while in transit but the wadio wave kept moving...heres the expliniation...

Ok i just have it figured out now this is a difficutw ayy to explain it mind you..

Imagine a regular kichen sink is the stargate system and the water is the wormhole the drain is the reciving staratew and the spout is the sending oneok then when you turn the water on it "sends" the wormhole (Water) to the reciving startgate now if you turned off the spout (sending wormhole) what ever water that is still in transition keeps going towards the drain. go ahead try it out you should see what im talking about

So in conclusion perhaps it is easier to imagine the stargate system as one big sink with amny drains except at your point of orgin there is the spout and each stargate has its individual spout that changes between a spout and a drain depending on wich way the wormhole is going

Although the plughole theory is fine for some transmission issues (see Vertex, above), it doesn't address this one...

The reception would still need to have the gate active at the receiving end for the message to come through the wormhole. Yes, the "water" (i..e message) would start into the "pipe" (i.e. wormhole) before the gate need necessarily be open, but it would not spurt out (i.e. be received) until the "tap" (gate) in the SGC was actually open.

I'd say THIS instance is just another screw-up in technical continuity/implementation. Sorry.

It's like in "Message in a Bottle" the technician saying all the computers are down and re-booting, whilst the one behind him is clearly up and running perfectly, as are most of the "banks of flashing lights" beside him. :)

Or, perhaps more significantly: in season 2 opener "Serpents Grasp", Daniel dived through the wormhole to the Alpha/Beta site with 2 seconds left on the C4 timers. Allegedly Apophis and Klorel were able to get from the peltak to the "gate room", dial (Chulak?), and get into the wormhole, all in less than two seconds.... :dead:

Yeah totally agree that couldn't happen. It would take about 15 seconds probably just to dial chulak.

Nah - it's actually explained by Bra'tac in "Family" that Apophis & Klorel ringed across to Klorel's ship and used the Stargate in it....

I think the simplist explnation is the best. In this case it would be this. The dialing needs to be complete in order for solid matter to pass through. Yet when it is dialing radio waves can pass through.

ZachWZ

Hi Zach - can't see how that would work. The radio waves and "solid" things both pass along the same medium: the wormhole. If one can pass, the other can. If one can't, the other can't.

How do yo uknow they pass the same medium? Perhaps But to a diffrent extent..Radio waves arent "solid" like matter is...after all the wormhole IS matter...its the event horision

Fundamental physics and stargate operation?

If it doesn't travel through the wormhole it can't get from A to B faster than light speed. Which would mean several decades before the message arrived...

The event horizon seems to only be artificial, since the womrhole itself is more "pipe" like, as per your earlier tap metaphor. Any matter travelling is first buffered, "inside" (#) the event horizon, then decomposed before transmission, probably as an energy blip like the ring transporters, before re-constitution at the event horizon again.

# - Not sure if the decomposing is actually consistent with the views of Daniel's face in the movie. [But that would be a much longer argument]

I still think we're discussing a "technical" reason for what is actually just a careless editing fault... ;)

Wow, havn't posted in a long time...
It was my understanding that they used the stargate BEFORE daniel. As for getting the message before the gate opens, I would consider it simply a technical error in the show.

As I recall, the footage of them leaving Apophis' ha'tak for Klorel's only comes after Daniel has jumped through the gate....
