The July 26 issue of TV Guide magazine will confirm in an exclusive report that Stargate SG-1 will return an eighth season, according to a press release just issued by the magazine. The issue is also the magazine's first to feature Stargate on the cover, with a photo of Richard Dean Anderson (Colonel Jack O'Neill) and Michael Shanks (Dr. Daniel Jackson)!

The magazine will also provide the inside scoop on the long-awaited "underwater" spin-off series Stargate Atlantis, which TV Guide reports is still planned for 2004. Could The Sci-Fi Channel be planning to air new episodes both series at the same time?

Brad Wright mentioned at gatecon that Atlantis would be going into production this year, and I beleived he did mention that the two series would show concurrently.

And i'm glad the news of season 8 has finally been made public... I've had to hold my lip for months

i hope they finish at eight, there's only so many series you can make without ruining the entire series...

yeah i wouldnt want stargate to end up like the xfiles.
does anyone know if RDA agreed to it??? I'm guessing he did, i only hope he will still be prominent in the show.

Allan, Allan, Allan...I can't believe you! Come on, this is the Aussie Contingent! We could have kept it secret if you told us! Well, maybe...

Jackers, re RDA...I read on Gateworld a few hours ago that he said in an interview that in S8 Jack is gonna get promoted. So whether he gets Hammond's job and stays on base, or whether he gets command of an off world base remains unclear.

These are interesting and exciting times for SG fans. We are indeed privileged to be watching the series further develop and follow whatever evolutionary course it's producers and crew choose to take it.

yeah i read it just before i came here:D

I hope sam gets to command sg-1, it would seem dumb to get a higher ranking officer to do it.

Still, alot of the show's commercial appeal comes from the fact that RDA is the lead character... And since he's staying, RDA would have to still play some sort of important role, SG-1 linked or not.

Anderson stays; O'Neill promoted in Season Eight

Taken from Gatworld.net .......

Anderson will continue with his reduced schedule, which in Season Seven was shortened to about three and a half days per week of filming in Vancouver, British Columbia. The actor has said that his priority lies with his 4-year-old daughter, who lives in California.

A promotion to brigadier general could indicate that O'Neill may be taking over command of the S.G.C., although actor Don S. Davis ("Major General George Hammond") has also indicated a desire to stay with the show. O'Neill has also expressed a desire in past episodes to command an off-world base for Earth ("Shades of Grey"). Just what the character's promotion will mean for the SG-1 team remains to be seen. But it may allow the show's writers more flexibility in writing stories that are not awkward in their lack of the team's commanding officer.

Fans have already noticed the effects of Anderson's reduced schedule, with his character largely uninvolved (though present) in Season Seven's early episodes. But the actor, in a recent interview with TV Zone magazine, promised that there is more Jack to come. "Since my time is limited I don't really have intricate storylines," he said. "However, later this season there are plans for some episodes that are strong for Jack. As such, we're saving up some of my workdays for these stories."
