This is what the team needs for those difficult missions...

Interesting...

Interesting stuff, Dawes. Thanks for sharing. ;)

Rowan <who'd really like to see an SG team get one of the new Stryker units through the gate...

Rowan;

Not to stray too far off path, but what do you think of the new Army Chief of Staff? I don't think the USAF ever called anyone out of retirement to be COS, but if he's that good then I guess it's the right move. I heard he's already started cleaning house, and some are saying he'll take a hard look at programs such as Stryker and FCS.

New Army CoS

I've heard good things about the man [never had the opportunity to meet him myself unless he was a patient of mine at some time] and those I've talked to are saying good things.

Time will tell...

I think we've had Stryker discussed here before, but what is FCS? [a real Stargate project? ;) ]

wow! wouldnt need to aim with one of those babies now would they?

yes indeed, what is FCS?

FCS

The FCS I know is 'Future Combat Systems' , a computer-based simulated training project. Their home page is 'Here' .

Like many things, it's sounds interesting on paper, but we'll see how it works when it's in actualy long-term use and how well the troops who were trained with this perform in an actualy combat invironment.

oh I think I know what you are talking about. I saw something that was similar to this, but it was for ground troops. It was kinda like the troops carrying around a portable computer screen that displayed battle data and had a camera on the end of the gun. so they could aim around corners or over walls without having to expose too much of themselves to enemy fire. i thought it looked really promising, but it was just so bulky and weighed like fifty pounds or something.

Replacement systems...

That sounds like the weapons system they're considering to replace the M-16 [not that I don't agree the M-16 needs replacing, 'coz I do]. It's electronically enhanced, heavy as a brick and there's next to no 'frist exhelon maintance' that can be done by the troop in the field.

I don't remember the nomenclature off the top of my head right now, but every time I see it, all I can think of is 'Let it drop once and it's toast'.

Not what I'd want to trust my life to in the field, that's for sure.

lol, that's exactly what i was thinking when i saw it. they have a looong way to go, but they are getting there.

On a related note, here's a slideshow depicting the new XM29 and XM8 weapons. The XM29 is an over/under weapon having both a 5.56mm rifle and a 20mm grenade launcher. The grenade launcher fires air-bursting munitions used in conjunction with a laser rangefinder and autoset fuzing system. The XM8 carbine is the expected replacement for the current M16/M4 series weapons:

The 29 is ugly as sin, I'd prefer an OICW for SG-1 to use. It's more theatrical. Also, it's HK and HK rules. Yeah, they need to bust out an OICW in SG-1 sometime. I am sure Teal'C would be all over that gun.

Thanks!

Loads of good data and info here, folks. Thanks for posting it and sharing. :D
