(Found) What is this book? Please help.

About 10 (ish) years ago, I read this book which was from the SF shelves of our local library.

It was about these people who rode these wierd animals (sort of like horses) that had spikes that could kill them if they rode them wrong and they went hunting for other animals. The animals changed/mutated/evolved into other animals. It was all very odd. They had a sort of "Hyppo" name? I think. Anyway, it was a good book and I want to read it again and I obviously need a title or something to work with!

The only thing that comes to mind is The Malacia Tapestry but I don't think that is it as their animals didn't 'morph' and the hunting bit was just a small portion of the story. Sorry I'm not much help, perhaps it rings a bell with someone else.

Just read the blurb for The Malacia Tapestry and I don't think it was that.

I think children hunted on these animals. The animals were enormous and very ferocius and then they turned into gentle creatures and everything was a bit wafty after that!

The creatures are called HIPPAE!!!

Peepers turn in to Hounds which turn in to Hippae which turn into Foxen...

Centres around a few characters, but one of the main ones is Marjorie Yrarier, Lady Westriding...
