Richard Dean Anderson is preparing for retirement

Stargate SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson is relieved that the series, being shot in Vancouver, is in its eighth and final season.

Anderson, who plays Col. Jack O'Neill on the sci-fi series, said he'll be retiring from the business.

"Well, as much as a workaholic can retire. I have some other things I want to do and they don't include necessarily working in front of a camera," said Anderson.

"I have a five-year-old daughter who I don't get to see enough, I'm going to build a house in California and I'm going to learn Spanish."

The success of Stargate is spawning a spinoff, called Stargate Atlantis, said Anderson.

"We're shooting it concurrently and it will hopefully pick up the ball. I'll help launch it. I'll be in the pilot but after that I'm done."

Joseph Malozzi, executive producer of the SCI FI Channel original series Stargate SG-1, also said that the series was in no danger of running out of ideas. "It all hearkens back to the fourth season on the show, when we were looking ahead at season five and saying, 'We're all out of ideas. I don't know how we're going to come up with ideas for season five,'" Malozzi said. "Amazingly, the longer the series goes on, the easier it is to come up with ideas, because you've got the backstories. You've got past episodes you can draw off of for future episodes. The longer we go, the more stories we have. I'm looking ahead to seasons 12 and 13."

He does also say that a major character will leave. The question is can it survive without RDA while another Stargate spin-off is running at the same time?

Jack leaving is not a very bad thing on it's own. The series has already changed radically since the first few seasons, and it survived Daniel leaving once already. But together with the airing of 'Atlantis' I think it will be difficult to carry on. When 'Star Trek: DS9' was airing at the same time as 'Star Trek: TNG' and then later 'Star Trek: VOY' the audience was split.

Yes, I read that article too and thought either (a) Joseph Mallozzi needs to be more careful in what he says, or (b) the author of the article didn't get it right, but I suspect it's a case of both.

There is NOTHING that states that the show will go beyond season 8. Robert Cooper said in the press just last week that they really don't know what's going on, as with every season, they have to renew contracts, and both actors' and crews' salaries go up. No matter how much Mallozzi may want to stay in a comfortable position, MGM will eventually look at the cost of making the show, and compare it to Atlantis, which is far cheaper, and chop SG1 out of hte picture. It's simple economics. That's why they made Atlantis. To get rid of SG1 and start fresh.

Alas, a lot of fans don't realize what goes on beyond the scenes, and when they read statements like the one above, they automatically think the show will go over forever. Considering RDA is cutting back more and more (probably to the point he'll be a special guest star!) the show will end sooner than later.

Not being cruel, just being realistic.

But as for 'not running out of plots,' well, yeah, guess they can rip off the Van Helsing movie since they ripped off THE CORE in the sixth season:evil:

I'm kind of glad that this next season will be the last.
I don't want to see it go down hill.

The Super Soldiers made me cringe, but they managed
to do a decent job. So I wouldn't say they've gone
down hill yet.

It's best to end shows at a strong point.

Gateworld has a article up saying that there may be a Season 9 of Stargate SG-1 since it is doing so good on the Scifi channel. There is actually a huge discussion on various different bulletin boards.

Is all this speculation purely speculation then?

I've said and had my massive schpiel on Season 8 being the last season for Stargate on other discussion boards and forums. I have come to some conclusions for my own sanity:

Whether or not Season 8 is the last...
1. I will continue to watch Stargate SG-1 as well as Atlantis. (Possibly and hopefully quality seasons and not just more seasons for the sake of having more seasons. This means, more character development, good story arcs, great action sequences, etc.) Quality folks, Quality. Quality is key.
2. I will try to refrain from saying/posting detrimental spoilers and speculation unless there is spoiler and speculation evidence (preferably credible ones :roll eyes: ).
3. If the show(s) go on for more than 10 seasons, I'm going to have to stop buying them kickarse DVD Box sets (as they're massively expensive when you get them the day they are released thus being at a higher priced range; I'll be poorer than a college student with loans... ).
4. No four. It's late and I just wanted to add a 4.
5. Again, no five. It's late and I need sleep.
6. Point proven: Don't need more points (seasons), if the points are pointless (seasons lack quality). ((Refer to #1 (1.)))

I don't think we can speculate soley on two articles/interviews, especially just one.

The whole RDA thing?...Like Dave said in earlier posts, if the show goes on without RDA, can it still hold? I don't know. I've got mixed feelings on this one. I'd prefer him to stay for the whole thing. If he leaves, as long as the show still holds, then go for it. If he leaves and the show heads on a downward spiral, I think it's time to "let it go". We know he has his reasons... most of us agree it's his choice, it's his life, and he's doing what he thinks is best for him and his family (Random: Wylie's such a cutie...). I also don't think one actor/character makes the entire show (I think you know what I mean). Yes, it is usually, if not always, detrimental to the whole when one leaves, but it still happens. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Life still goes on. He will be missed when he leaves. They (everyone as well as the show) will be missed when it is...that dreaded c word that for some reason I can't bring myself to type? lol...c- c- canc- can- ...canned?

As for Malozzi's "I'm looking ahead to seasons 12 and 13."
Ever think he was joking? They've said it almost every season... never say never, regarding future seasons when asked if this season is the last. Hey, he's keeping up beat. Most of us have seen the behind the scenes, lowdowns, and whatnot... playful to say the least.

Robert C. Cooper, executive producer of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate SG-1, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming eighth season will wrap up a few things...

In response to a question about whether the upcoming season will be the show's last, Cooper said, "We also are not going to completely end the show. We never wanted to end the show. Our intention was to leave it open so that SG-1 was still out there on adventures and also leave the door open for features or TV movies or direct-to-video movies or whatever, that sort of thing, so that the franchise will continue."

Not really. I am sure their are many many members of the cast and crew who feel completely different than RDA and genuinely love the show and what they are doing and do in fact want it to go on for longer. If they still have good material and quality actors I think the show could survive a departure of RDA personally. Just my 2 cents.

I somewhat agree on the RDA thing.

Yes, it could "survive", but would we still have the "quality"? Possibly, maybe, why not... They do say they have 'quality' "material" and there is definitely still a great cast and crew...
However, I strongly believe if he were to leave completely, they would not continue with the show.

Hypothetically assuming his departure for a season 9, I really feel legally and paperwork-ly (please bare with me, I can't find the right words... ) by binding contract of his character that the show would not be allowed to continue... for similar reasons as to why the characters of O'Neill and Jackson must be in the pilots of Atlantis...

Do you mean like Worf's appearance on 'Star Trek: DS9' in the fourth Season?

I think he fitted in quite well there, but I can think of other spin-off series where the constant appearance of characters from the original show stopped their development.

I think that if 'Stargate Atlantis' is going to succeed it needs to make it's own way independent of 'Stargate: SG-1'. If they feel the need to have constant crossovers it will be a sign that it is failing. Once established (3rd or 4th Season onwards) then they can add characters from SG-1.

Nor would I.. or even see SG-1 continue with Corrin returning or someone else popular. Maybourne maybe?? Anyways, just because RDA wants out I do not think that essentially dooms the show. If Sci-fi is happy with the ratings (as of now they are estatic) and they still have stories (already stated they have enough ideas for at least 10-12 seasons) and the rest of the ensemble cast wanted to continue I see no reason it could not. Though I would miss RDA, I think 1 single character leaving does not doom it, even RDA's character.

When the cast was asked about Season 9 at the Aug. Convention in NJ, they said they were in negotiations for a Season 9. Michael Shanks said he couldn't see why they wouldn't have a season 9 with the way the ratings have been.

Don Davis said he would be appearing in a made for Video Movie and a feature film and may be doing some guest appearances in later seasons.

Chris Judge also said they were in negotiations for Season 9 with MGM and SciFi.

So it sounded kind of hopeful that there would be another season as long as they avoid Jumping the Shark.
