Battle Beyond the Stars (1980)

A prime example of Robert Vaughan and George Peppard strutting their atypical wooden actting.

Nice film, if rather Battlestar Galactica, and suffered from a tight budget.

Battle Beyond the Stars

A peaceful planet gathers together seven mercenaries to protect it from total destruction.

It is a film that shows the good and bad in balance.

On the downside the innocent natives over play the dork aspect of their lives, especially Shad. Robert Vaughan as always playing Napolean Solo and George Peppard playing his usual drunken cowboy.

On the good side we have what must be the ultimate in cinematic story telling, 'The Seven Samurai', it must be for the film not to be a total dog from the first credits. Everything is there a suspicious native population, acceptance and futile bravery.

Thought about this film a couple of weeks ago and ran across it on Netflix last night. Really a can't miss formula for people who do more than just watch a film. A John Sayles script based on an Akira Kurasawa original film. A wonderful James Horner soundtrack, Robert Vaughn reprising his role from the Magnificent Seven. Roger Corman produced it and Gale Ann Hurd and James Cameron work on it. This film had as many "in jokes" and tributes as most Quintin Tarentino movies.

If they'd had a really tiny budget, they could have made Battle Beneath the Stairs. I'm sure it would've been a good seller....

I'll get my coat.

Many more puns like that and a ban is stering you in the face, Ursa.

There is no she - and no closet, for that matter - here.

(However, I do reserve the right to raid the basement for my puns.)

The movie Star Wars really inspired a great deal of space movies and sci-fi oddball flicks. That's why I like films like Battle Beyond the Stars because it is a low-budget film that trys to break from the usual movie formulas and typical dramas. The creators try out different things and inject comedy when things get dull, sometimes it works, and other times it just makes things seem silly. Like aliens trying hotdogs from Earth.

That's the beauty of these weird sci-fi features, they go one step further than an average film that goes by the numbers.
