SG Con in the US
There are actually a couple of groups of folks thinking about it, but it's difficult to get the actors and the fans all in one place at a cost that's reasonable for the convention staff to put it on & the fans to pay for it. The logistics are 'interesting':
Hotel rental cost [rooms for panel discussions, photos, autographs, dealer rooms, 'Green Room' for the actors to rest in, etc].
Hotel room cost for fans at a reasonable price.
A/V Rental costs [not a lot of hotels provide their own anymore - cameras, lights, sound, stageing, etc].
Actor's contracts [can be a biggie] and availability, plus losging, airfare, etc.
Advertising, insurance costs, etc. It adds up a lot. that's why a lot of folks run across the actors doing smaller, already established cons like Dragoncon, FanOydessey, UnitedFanCon, etc - the logistics of the con are already in place and you're not trying/learning how to run a con at the same time you're trying to figure out how to manage the actor angle/logistics.
Gatecon has the largest number of actors in one series in one place for a couple of special reasons: the timing [either during the middle hiatus of filming or just after the wrap so folks are still in the area and don't have other acting commitments] and the location [a lot of the actors live in the area and for those who don't it's not too hard to fly them in]. Also, the difference between the US dollar, the Canadian dollar and the British pound makes running Gatecon in Canada a bit lower in cost for hotel and stuff. The US and UK funds go further for a lot of con goers.
Not counting the diffeence in cost-of-living in different locations of the world.
These are just a few of the things that have to be taken into account when trying to set up a bit cone like Gatecon. I did the hotel 'search' and started with 18 hotels in the greater Vancouver area, narrowed it down to 7 and did the final 'site evaluation' between the top two to present to C4. The decision to go with the Best Western - where we've been for the last 4 years, was made after many weeks of work looking over things like room cost, location of hospitals, grocery stores, A/V supply, how big were the available rooms, how many power outlets per room - countless things that filled up a 15 page 'check sheet' for each of the 7 hotels myself and two other walked through in a three day span of time.
And that way just the site. I don't even want to guess all the hoops that Richard goes through with advertising, Fryn with each and every actor's contact and contract, Sue with all the selling, buying and shipping and Allan with each and every aspect of stage, lights, sounds, etc.
It's a daunting task.
I'm not saying someone else couldn't do the same by any means. But to do another Gatecon means a lot of work and, at least, a year plus work before it gets off the ground. And if a couple of folks on the con team have run a con before, it will make it a lot easier.
