Ok, I'm a little slow I realize, but watching all the earlier eps on DVD does bring up issues that slipped by me the first time.

If all Jaffa have to Kelnoreem, do they all get hours of meditation time per day -- with myriads of candles?

Is there a special requisition for all motherships for Jaffa candle allowance?

Do the Jaffa meditate all at once or in shifts? What happens if the ship is attacked when part or all of the Jaffa are performing necessary symbiote maintenance?

In battle, in seige, on long marches, on relentless campaigns wouldn't kelnoreem make the Jaffa a less than desirable fighting force? (Ok, guys, we'll just hunker down out here until they have to kelnoreem, then we'll strike as soon as they light their candles :D )

Ah! Someone has discovered our weakness, be very afraid! :D

Seriously though, do Jaffa have to perform this daily at a particular time for a certain length of time? And even if they do, is it any different to sleeping? Soldiers have to sleep like anyone else, but they can still function as soldiers. Tired soldiers just function less well.

The 'candle allowance' might be more of a problem though.

interesting...

Not to mention smoke alarms...

Is Kelnoreem stated as a daily requirement?

Interesting question.

I think the candle replication technology that the Goa'uld
stole from the USS Enterpise can account for the candels.
;) :rolly2:

Actually, they Kelnoreem because CJ had a habit of dozing off under the lights when he didn'r have anything to say but had to be in a scene.

I don't think the kelnoreem requirements have been clearly stated -- which is good for the writers since it presents less limitations. We do know that without it a Jaffa becomes sick and could even die -- much as anyone would if perpetually deprived of sleep.

Perhaps the longer a Jaffa goes without kelnoreem, the longer he must remain in kelnoreem when the opportunity arrives.

As for the candles, there have been times when Teal'c has placed himself in kelnoreem sans candles ("Demons" for instance). Maybe the candles are just a nice atmospheric touch which the SGC permits (smoke alarms notwithstanding).

After years of theatre training, I always cringe when a set is ablaze with candles. Someone has to set them up, light them, mind them, put them out -- and the rest of the cast and crew have to be careful not immolate themselves, the set and the equipment.

All those candles may make a great dramatic effect, but isn't the light of single candle better than cursing the darkness -- and sufficient for any meditative activity?

The candles may be Teal'c's personal choice, as ex-First Prime of Apophis. The logistics is as stated previously: all human troops need to sleep, which Jaffa don't, but the latter can still work a shift system allowing say 4-12 hours "off" each day for kelnoreem and any personal stuff they want to do: repair kit, train, iron their mail shirts ;), recharge their weapons (which theoretically must happen) etc.

I think it's "The Warrior" (s5) where the Jaffa implicitly make fun of the humans need for sleep whilst they carry on chatting and catching up and planning etc, though presumably at some point they kelnoreen.

Come to think of it, I don't recall candles for any other Jaffa -- except (I think) during the ritual when Teal'c was deprived of his symbiote to break Apophis brainwashing. Seems to me that open flame in the infirmatory (oxygen tanks?) would be a bad idea and would have been nixed by Dr. Frasier (Hey, Teal'c's really out of it now, so we don't need the candles, right?)

It does explain why SG-1 can walk up every corridor on a Mothership and only ever see the same handful of Jaffa guards. Now I realise that the rest were all in the Kelnoreem Room (not seen).

We saw in the flash-backs in "Threshold" that Jaffa seem to spend some of their time in bunk rooms - though this might have been Cronus or Apophis specific.

Conversely, when freed of their servitude, they tend to spend all their time (e.g. "The Warrior", "Allegiance", etc.) in training and socialising...

Hasn't it been established that Jaffa only require a few hours of Kelnoreem? So they probably do like 6 if they have time, but only need like 2 to feel rested.

As for candles, I think it's ceremonial and not at all required.

PS: Apparently Jaffa Kelnoreem laying down most of the time in a dark barracks or bedroom (Threshold), which strikes me as odd because we've only seen it like that once.

I think its also mentioned or implied on a couple of the season 6/7 extras on Region2 DVDs....

They mention it somewhere in the Season 5 or 6 commentaries.

Thanx for answering my question,
Hatshepsut, PTeppic, and beckman!

Hey, that sorta rhymed!:rolly2: LOL

LOL...hmmm... interesting indeed. :D I thought Hatshepsut was joking. ...

I wonder if the writers have actually thought about that. Going on the 8th year, I'm thinking they have... :D
