(Found) Author or title help?

I'm trying to remember the author or titles to a couple of books I read probably ten years ago. It's a series of probably three fantasy novels. They invovle a boy who steals a dragon egg and hatches it out in the desert (?) by an oasis. The boy lives at a dragon hatchery, and wears a leather bag around his neck, holding his money. He is basically an indentured servant, and can buy his freedom. The dragon ends up being a mute. He competes with the dragon in the fights in town, trying to win enough money to buy his freedom. His dragon ends up being one of the best fighters and people love him because he can't roar (the dragon might actually have been female, I'm not sure...)
Can anyone help me?

Parts of this sound like the Joel Rosenberg series of books but I think that part was only a small portion of that series. It mainly dealt with four D&D type players from our world who end up in their 'imaginary' world. I remember in one of them, one of the characters did something like this.

I found the answer elsewhere, it is the Pit Dragons series by Jane Yolen.

Fantastic! That would be why I couldn't help, I've never read any of her stuff. Maybe I'll have to see what she's all about now...
