I work for the Federation, and the earlier pioneers of my work also worked for the Federation, but there could be some who are in Starfleet or on non-aligned independent worlds too.

All technology is indispensable if you are willing to dress in furs and use clubs as weapons.

What I do does support life, but it is not 'life-support' machinery. Sorry to be so cryptic, but to say any more would give the game away.

My occupation has been seen more than once, and the fruits of my labours seen in several episodes. I am working down on a planet when we meet me. Much earlier though, a team of scientists attempting to do much the same thing (but calling it something else) are shipbound and their technology is still not perfected.
