I guess you are right about the class codes Ray, and if 'Galactica' was the very first of the 'Battlestar' class of ships, then they could well be all 'Battlestar Galactica' class ships.
Only that I didn't get the impression in the mini-series that the 'Galactica' itself was all that unusual or special. They seemed to imply that it was not a flagship and that Adama was slightly out of favour, otherwise surely he would have been given a better command on a more modern ship. I thought it was being turned into a museum simply because it was one of the few remaining ships of that class, and also because of it's exploits during the war.
I thought of it a little like the cruiser HMS Belfast that is permanently moored on the south bank of the Thames. When that was built it was nothing special, but it ended up being the last big gun armoured warship of World War II, and then took part in the Korean War. It is only interesting because of it's long history. As compared to something like HMS Warrior at Portsmouth, the first iron-hulled, armoured battleship in the world, that never had to fire a weapon in combat because it's design was so revolutionary.
