Was it a concious decision by the producers and dierctor to make these two seem so incedibly gay?

"I will never let go of you Pip" and the coutless times they looked like they were going to kiss. I mean what two males would talk to each other in such a manner and have a relationship as "close" as that..

I kept hoping that one of those giant flying Nasgool would pick them up and drop them into Mount Doom and end everyones suffering..

I think the word you are looking for is gaye, not gay. They are different.

So you have an objection to chaps being life long and loyal friends, with deep love for each other, without the moronic associations you will undoubtedly attempt to infer.

I do think that the relationship in the books is different though. It begins being a master-servant relationship and it becomes a one of equals later after they must rely on each so much to complete the task. Since there is less time available in the films to develop that, it is almost lost.

There was nothing sexual in their relationship at all.

Between Frodo and Samwise the master/servant thing is strong and it was held up quite well through the films.

But Merry and Pipin were equals in their social status and their strong friendship grew through out the books and this perhaps was not as well defined by the film?

Yes, I was thinking of Frodo and Samwise

Maybe there is something in what Khatab says. I personally don't see it, they were just cousins, but there is a large amount of Slash fiction posted on the www about Merri and Pippin, so more than a few other people must have thought the same thing.
