Synopsis
An advanced starship searches for the cure to an alien virus that could kill everyone on Earth.

The year is 2267. In retaliation for the defeat of the Shadows, their evil allies, the Drakhs, attack Earth. Earth fends them off, but the Drakhs release a virus over the entire planet. Scientists predict that the unstoppable virus will adapt itself to human biology in about five years and kill every person on Earth--unless a cure is found elsewhere in the galaxy. Impulsive and principled Captain Matthew Gideon (series star GARY COLE) accepts the challenging mission and assumes the helm of the gigantic Excalibur vessel, humankind's most advanced starship. Battling Earth bureaucrats, Gideon insists on including his trusted telepathic first officer, Lieutenant John Matheson (series star DANIEL DAE KIM). When Gideon meets a resourceful thief, Dureena Nafeel (series star CARRIE DOBRO), whose people were wiped out by the Drakhs, her passion persuades him to demand that she be released to help him in the quest. Dureena brings a benevolent techno-mage, Galen (series star PETER WOODWARD), a mysterious humanoid creature with magical technology and his own ship. Galen has helped Gideon before and also aids in this mission.

Meanwhile, acerbic archaeologist Max Eilerson (series star DAVID ALLAN BROOKS) labors with his team at an ancient dig on a remote planet when a Drakh ship being chased by an Earth battleship crashes nearby. Several Drakhs survive and prepare to kill the defenseless party when the Excalibur comes to the rescue. Eilerson joins Gideon, whose crew is completed by self-reliant physician Dr. Sarah Chambers (series star MARJEAN HOLDEN).

First impressions are often misleading, but I quite enjoyed the first episode.

To start the cast appeared so comfortable that the rather cliched phrase, 'I will be here when you need me' from Gideon's guardian angel didn't wrankle

It rather looks as if Captain Gideon is going to be of the Kirk mode, going on all the away missions, but that aside there was little corniness in the story and it all fell into place smoothly.
Even when Gideon suddenly finds that his ship is under attack and he must go back at once to defend it. Then with a single blast of the death ray all the drakh ships disappear. It fitted.
