Synopsis
Gideon mediates between Earth miners and the residents of a planet containing a virus-fighting mineral--and a fire-breathing dragon.
Gideon and the Excalibur are called to deal with disgruntled residents of planet Regula 4. The simple, agrarian human colony living there is upset that Earth has sent miners to aggressively remove a mineral that could cure the Drakh virus. The Earth workers strip-mine a huge swatch right next to a town, seriously threatening the villagers' health, instead of seeking a safer but less concentrated deposit elsewhere on the planet.
Another Earthforce destroyer-class ship, Medusa, used to transport the miners, receives a report that a huge fire-breathing dragon is driving the workers away from the mine. Upon learning this, a bemused Galen leads Gideon to the surface and introduces his old friend, Alwyn (EDWARD WOODWARD - "The Equalizer"), another techno-mage. Alwyn protects the villagers, performing magical deeds and pranks like the dragon to scare off the miners.
However, the Medusa's determined Captain Daniels (MARSHALL TEAGUE) refuses to stop the operation. After a series of confrontations between villagers and the miners, Alwyn intercedes and prepares to destroy the Medusa. Daniels fires at the mine, apparently killing Alwyn and accidentally vaporizing the mineral deposit. Gideon negotiates with the remorseful colonists to release hostages they took and help the miners find another deposit that is safer. Still secretly alive, Alwyn explains to Galen that the residents became too reliant on him. Alwyn embarks on his next adventure while Galen and Gideon return to the Excalibur.
