ok so there are 39 glyphs on the gate and when you dial out, the last one your enter is the point of origin of the planet ur currently on or orbiting around

does that mean that the gate system can only take you to a maximum of 39 different planets if each one is to represent their own gate?

or is the point of origin different on the dhd on each planet so every dhdh in the universe is slightly different cos of that one glyph? if thats the case then way back in season 3 how did the team dial off of thors ship? because i believe they used the gate from earth which wouldnt have the point of origin glyph on it of whatever planet they were orbiting

my head hurts

This has been discussed in "Technical" previously...

Although some gates have extra, unique, point of origin glyphs (e.g. the Gamekeeper's planet) the vast majority of planets appear to have identical gates. Whilst this would allow the use in another location, as has happened a few times, it also means each point of origin is used more than once.

This is perhaps because its more symbolic - do you need to know the phone number for the phone you're dialling FROM when you make a call? Maybe the point of origin just tells the gate the dialling sequence is finished, so that when the gate is used without a DHD (manually dialling or on earth) the gate can make the connection...

Or, it was a gimmick in the film and they didn't quite think it through for the series...

It does make sense becvause on some worlds you cant get to other worlds. The Gate on earth can go anywhere, but on other gates you can only go to a certain number of other worlds because the DHD's have different gliphs on them., Remeber in the episode where SG-1 is stuck in the off world prison? Daniel tries to get an adress that the Stargate will be able to dial because there is a limited number of gliphs on each startgate.

Also on other occasions SG-1 has lost there remot transmitters and have had to find other planets they could go to, but they had to rule out some because the stargate couldn't dial certain planets.

Also if all of that didn't make sense. planets in orbit around the same sun, should be able to have the same home glyph, such as each state has its own area code.

That was pretty confusing....but It makes sense to me.:D

I think you may be getting a little confused...

If you're talking about "Prisoners", they couldn't use the DHD because there wasn't one. I've never seen an episode where they couldn't dial Earth directly if they had wanted to (but...)

This is a different argument: they have to dial a second planet where they know they can find someone else from the SGC who has a GDO, not because the DHD can't dial Earth. If they can't find a GDO they're still stuck off-world...

Why should they? The first six chevrons would possibly be quite similar though. The point of origin, as defined, is a per Gate symbol: the two gates on Earth have different symbols. The symbols seem to imply a 3D position in space, so at least twice SG-1 have used a different gate in orbit round earth to dial, but using the normal Earth point of origin as the the seventh chevron.
