SG-1 S8 and Atlantis S1 - interaction

This doesn't really fit into the episode specific season sub-forums, so I've put it here...

I've just received the S8 SG-1 DVD, without the Atlantis S1 episodes... and there seem to be some big jumps:

Sam promoted to Colonel, Pegasus as a gate address etc.

These get mentioned around episode 3 or 4 of SG-1's season 8. Does this mean that you really do need to watch the interleving Atlantis to avoid such jumps?

Have you not seen Atlantis? Because I don't think you need to, but then I have seen both in parallel so it's difficult to remember.

I'm pretty sure that Sam Carter is only ever mentioned once, as an object of desire by Rodney McKay. And don't they know the Atlantis Gate address in Season 7?

If the DVD player wasn't jumping around at the end of episode 2 it turns out I'd have seen this bit...
