Well, I'm trying my damnedest to get my name out on the market, so I was thinking about submitting some of my short stories to a magzine or an e-zine. I was wondering what your thoughts are on zines and do I need to copyright my work before I submit it?

Any info would be great.

Also, can I submit the same story to one than one zine?

Some magazines accept simultaneous subs, others don't. Be sure to read their guidelines clearly and see what the case is. Again, some accept electronic subs, others don't and many have strict guidelines on formatting. Strange Horizons is one mag that's been great to me, providing useful feedback on rejected material.

I cannot speak specificaly for sci-fi fantasy publications, but in the coffee table rag market, i do know that exclusivity is required. also be very clear which rights you are offering them, ie nationonal, international, internet etc. remember the entire pokemon craze was based on one short story. if you are submitting a work which has already been accepted elsewhere, it is common good practice to allow the publication to know that this work is accepted elsewhere, ie: 1st, 2nd etc country rights. i cannot think of any reason why a sff publication would have different requirements. hope that assists.

so, say if i was to submit a short story to a zine. how would i got about the rights to it? i've emailed the local writers foundation of the province in which i live about it but they haven't responded.

I believe that you own all rights to your work unless other contested (ie, someone claiming in court that you plagarised). I'm also under the impression that the places you submit to should be pretty clear on what exact rights they are looking to purchase.

When I finished my "novel" (which now looks like the foundation for a "novel series" I started trying to learn about getting published. Idiots Guide to Science Fiction Publishing and many, many Internet opinions all agree that getting to the major publishers is often accomplished through an agent. Getting to an agent is often accomplished through short fiction markets.

There are many good fiction markets. I know one very well... Okay, I know several well. Below is a link to my favorite free market search tool. (I hope link are allowed on this forum--if not, Admin, please delete link.)

Copyright is automatic when you write something and put your name on it. Registering copyright is a process through the Library of Congress. Believe it or not, registering copyright is considered amateurish. The Publisher of your novel will do that. Publishers of print magazines will do that. Most web zines just declare copyright without registering it.

The info:

http://www.storypilot.com

This site is very powerful. Built from a database, it is searchable along MANY parameters.

Another premiere tool for the genre is http://www.ralan.com . Though not searchable like StoryPilot, Ralan's has been around a long time and is considered one of the authorities on market information.

As far as submitting to more than one at a time—That is called "simultaneous submissions" or sometimes "sim-subs" for short. Consult each publication's guidelines as to whether they accept simultaneous submissions or not.

And the one tip I would give-USE STANDARD MANUSCRIPT FORMAT FOR YOUR SUBMISSION except as specifically stated otherwise in the guidelines!
