David Tennant is new Doctor

Well, it's official - David Tennant has been confirmed as the new Dr Who.

From the BBC:
David Tennant will play the next Doctor, it was announced today by Jane Tranter, BBC Controller of Drama Commissioning.

Tennant, whose recent credits include BBC Three's Casanova, Blackpool and He Knew He Was Right, will star alongside Billie Piper who returns as Rose Tyler for the upcoming Christmas Special and second series.

"I am delighted, excited and honoured to be the tenth Doctor!" said David. "I grew up loving Doctor Who and it has been a lifelong dream to get my very own TARDIS.

"Russell T Davies is one of the best writers television has ever had, and I'm chuffed to bits to get the opportunity to work with him again. I'm also really looking forward to working with Billie Piper who is so great as Rose.

"Taking over from Chris is a daunting prospect; he has done a fantastic job of reinventing the Doctor for a new generation and is a very tough act to follow."

"Christopher Eccleston's wonderful Doctor has reinvented the role, so that it now appeals to the best actors in the land," noted Executive producer/writer Russell T Davies. "I'm already writing David's first new adventure on board the TARDIS!

"Regeneration is a huge part of the programme's mythology, and I'm delighted that new, young viewers can now have the complete Doctor Who experience, as they witness their hero change his face!"

"Christopher Eccleston has given an exceptional performance as the ninth Doctor," added Executive Producer Julie Gardner. "David Tennant is a great actor who will build on the excellent work already done by Christopher in establishing Doctor Who for a new generation."

I think he'll do quite well. He proved he can do slightly eccentric when he was Casanova so should be able to carry of the Doctor!

I really don't know him or his work. I had heard of Christopher Eccleston before, especially after '28 Days Later'. Tennant is another actor that Russel T Davies likes.

The big news there is that there will be a 'regeneration sequence' this time around. I wish they would confirm or deny whether Eccleston was the Nineth Doctor. There was speculation that he is still Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor.

What was wrong with the film? Or should I be asking in another thread...

The film was a... disapointment...

Said more about what is wrong with American TV than anything else, a few fancy effects and a bag of jelly babies, but generally flat and lifeless.

I do not think anybody would think any better of it if all they had ever seen was the new rendition. But it would be interesting to find out?

For what it is worth the place to look is here http://64.46.119.37/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=7076

Cheers ray. How long have I been here? And I still don't always check the other threads first... what a disgrace.

And I'm off topic now as well - not a good day!

So, David Tennant huh?

Hmm, yes, David Tennant. I do like the guy, but I still think they should have gone with someone older. Or are younger Doctors supposed to appeal more to today's youngsters?

Back on Topic then...

Tennant - Hot or Not?

Who do you prefer? Eccleston or Tennant? Or someone else?

Tennant Trivia:

David Tennant is Scottish. He was born on 18 April 1971
Bathgate, West Lothian, Scotland, UK. That makes him much younger than any previous Doctor actors - born 9 years after the first episode aired.

Tennant was born David McDonald but changed his name as there was an actor with the same name already on the books of Equity. He adopted the professional name "Tennant" — inspired by Neil Tennant, the lead singer of the Pet Shop Boys.

He grew up in Ralston, Renfrewshire, where his father was the local minister, and later a Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.

He attended Ralston Primary School, Paisley Grammar and graduated from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.

He decided to be an actor at the age of three. Tennant told his parents that he wanted to become an actor because he was mad about Doctor Who.

He was asked to abandon his Scottish accent to play the Time Lord.

He was nominated for a 2003 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Best Actor of 2002 for his performance in "Lobby Hero" performed at the Donmar Warehouse and the New Ambassador's Theatres.

In January 2006, readers of the British gay and lesbian newspaper 'The Pink Paper' voted Tennant the "Sexiest Man in the Universe" over David Beckham and Brad Pitt. A poll of over 10,000 women for the March 2006 issue of 'New Woman' magazine ranked him 20th in their list of the "Top 100 Men".

After moving to London, England in the early 1990s, Tennant lodged with comic actress and writer Arabella Weir, with whom he became close friends and then godfather to one of her children. (He later appeared as a guest in her spoof television series 'Posh Nosh').

As of 2006, Tennant is dating actress Sophia Myles, who appears with him in the upcoming 'Doctor Who' episode 'The Girl in the Fireplace'.

Who do you prefer? Eccleston or Tennant? Or someone else?

I do prefer Eccleston, terribly. I found him to be very fresh and different - his smile and dorkish sincerity really made the character enjoyable. It's a shame he's decided to leave.

Tennant for sure. And I am one of the fans who actually enjoyed the TV Movie, and no not because I am american lol. I liked the Doctor and Master having it out on Earth one last time, at the eve of the New Millenium. That is what impressed me the most. It really took the rivalry and long-standing feud of the Doctor and Master to new-albiet controversial- heights.

Ok lol back on topic: David Tennant. Yeh. He IS the Doctor. Mind, Ive only seen up to The Girl in the Fireplace but am even more impressed with him and his kind of stories. Hope he stays on a while. We need a good three-year Doctor again, like the old days.

Tennant, without a shadow of a doubt.

I just feel he brings more oomph to the part, I can't explain it very well, I simply think he's the better Doctor although Eccleston was very good in his own right.

xx

We were lucky to get two great Doctors right off the bat that are both generally considered to be good portrayals, considering how so many fans argue over the validity of the last few from the old series.

I agree with you lordoftime. Both actors have been exceptional! But what are they going to do now without Rose? She will leave a horribly big gap in the show.

You're right there Spaceship, she will be a hard act to follow. The creators have really gotta come up with something to fill that gap.
