Looking for Collection of Short Stories

This is a book of short stories by one man, wish i knew his name it was a very Russian sounding name -- science fiction stories all about different methods of creating the soul.

One story would be bright and others dark, mad scientist type stuff, but all amazingly brilliant stories.

Anyone ever read this and know what it is and who the author is?

I read it about 15 years ago in hardback at the library in my hometown and I believe it's a fairly old book early to mid 20th century would be my guess.

he wrote a lot of short stories, many of which were collated into short anthologies

Unlikely to be Isaac Asimov, as he had no belief in a soul, and seldom used the concept in fiction, save satirically.

Try Robert Magidoff. He has an anthology of short stories from the late 60s. That might be it.
