Hey, can anyone recommend a few programming books, preferably ones concerning C++, Java, Php, and COBAL? I'm a noob when it comes to most of these, but I'd like a staircase of books so after I'm done with one, I can work my way up. I've been lazy these past years and have been falling back on (X)HTML and CSS when I'm pretty well off in both, however, I want to learn more!

Also, any books on how to create simple computers would help too. Thank you. :D

I have limited knowledge of books on computers, but I can say you might have better luck with online guides and tutorials. Books and anything else about computers can become outdated quickly.

Ever the classic, and written by the creator of C++ itself.
The C++ Programming Language

It's quite dense though - the C++ Primer is better if you're getting started - you didn't mention how much C++ you already know.

Actually, have a look at this faq - it's got all the advice you need (for C++ anyway). It has links to online tutorials as well - that's a little further down the page.

What do you mean by "create simple computers" - do you mean small embedded devices? If so, I'm interested in anything others might have to say.
