Hi all, new here but not to reading. I am on a classical kick lately and am looking for some collections of ERB's stuff....

John Carter of Mars and Tarzan

Are either of these in collected form? Like the Robert E Howard Conan/Solomon/Bran stuff or the collected works of Doyle and Holmes?

Thanks a million and I look forward to visiting here again!

why does it matter if they are in "collected" form?

Welcome to the Forums!

Well, as Steve said, the SFBC published several ... in fact, the entire John Carter of Mars set ... with the exception of the first, A Princess of Mars, they were collected together two to a volume, with illustrations by Frank Frazetta (and, in the final volume, Richard Corben). I don't think the Tarzan books have been collected together as such, with the exception of two or three together, and those you might find from Dover, I think. Besides, there were about 24 Tarzan books, including the collections of short stories, as I recall. However, they've gone through lord knows how many printings each, and should be quite easy to find. There are also several good bibliographies of ERB's work if you need a chronological list of any series he did.

Thanks for the directions!!!

As for collections, I enjoy having all/most of the stories in one/two books. makes them handy to read and easy on the already sagging bookshelves!!!

but then you lose out on the fantastic, cheesy covers!

oh, how I pine for Barsoom, Dejah Thoris, and sleeping silks and furs!

You should also track down his Venus series. Less well known but still Tarzan in Space

There's also Lin Carter's Jandar of Callisto series, which is a homage to ERB's Barsoomian novels.

There's also Moorcock's Kane of Old Mars, which collects together his three Michael Kane books, another tribute to ERB. Early Moorcock (and it shows), but they can be fun, and the third in the set shows considerable improvement over the first.

A couple of years ago I picked up the Gold Star Tarzan ripoff titles that the Burroughs foundation had removed from the stores due to copyright infringement. That would be Tarzan and the Cave city, ..Silver Globe,..Snake People, ..Abominable Snowman, .. Winged Invaders.
They are very, very, bad. In one book there is a two page discussion about bringing beans along on safari!

hey all, well I am back and thrilled. I recently won a lot of ERB John Carter of Mars Books 1-9 for like 8 bucks. I have them and am reading them all. What a fantastic work!!!!

And yes I love the chessy covers...a co-worker thought I was reading a porn novel when I brought in A Princess of Mars.....:D

I recently obtained the first book in the Venus series. The opening paragraph was enough to get me hooked. What a fantastic writer.

Don't forget Pellucidar or the Moon Maid series either.

I think the 3D porn sites are missing a beat by not introducing green martian women...tusks, four hands, don'tchya know...

There's also Lin Carter's Jandar of Callisto series, which is a homage to ERB's Barsoomian novels.
Lin Carter's Callisto series started off reasonably well in the first 3 books, but degenerated after that into unbearably boring stuff. The only good thing about those later volumes are the titles - e.g. Mind Wizards of Callisto - very promising - but alas when you try reading it... you realize that ERB know something which his imitators didn't. Part of it is ERB's much underrated style; when he was on form he really was a master of prose rhythm.
