Does anyone here read Michael Slade?

Ok, I admit it. I ... am a Sladist.

That's what those of us who are fans of the work of author Michael Slade (aka Jay and Rebecca Clarke) call ourselves. Of course, you're not really a true Sladist until you've read all of the books (which I admit I haven't).

But I was just wondering if we have any Sladists - or wannabe Sladists - lurking around here?

I have read two of his books.

Zombie and Ghoul, both dealing with a Canadian special forces. Both were interesting and quite grusome, I think they pre date the current trend in forensic fiction.

How many books has he done in this series?

Might try to pick some up.

I didn't realize anyone had actually responded to my post. Sorry about that Ice fyre.

There is now 13 novels in the Special X Squad series, although Slade has written 14 novels. The newest one, RED SNOW, has just been published in Canada. His last novel, CRUCIFIED, was a one-off (well, so far), that featured a completely different set of characters than those in the Special X Squad novels.

Many of the earlier novels are currently out of print, so you'd have to look for them used.

I've read all of the Slade books up to "Hangman", which I have here somewhere under a pile of other books. Good stories. I especially like "Ghoul", "Headhunter" and "Ripper".

The rest, through his World War Two novels, (I forget the name of the two books that deal with the European and Pacific wars), I have also. Somewhere.

Having said that...

I don't know if it's just me or what, but I find him a bit, ahh... "dry?" I don't know if that's the right word.

When I read a book, I like to feel like I'm there with the characters. Examples: "The Terror" by Dan Simmons or any of "The Wheel of Time" series by Robert Jordan. With Slade, I'm always aware that it's just a book. A good book, but a book nonetheless.

Still, Slade's ideas interest me for the most part and he is a good read despite my detachment.

Or maybe, I'm just nuts.
