Our storm of swords

So I'm a moderater on another forum with the responsibility of running the occasional tournament.

I think it'd be kick ass to run one in this forum with the idea of being which knight/sellsword/warrior, etc. would beat them all. All characters of the four books are eligible for nomination.

If a character is in the tourney, any poll they face, we assume they are at their peak battle condition. I.E. Gregor isn't in the dungeons, Brienne has more than a tourney sword, Jaime has both hands, and Beric hasn't died.

The idea would be to start with a field, preferably of 32, but 16 would work, of names and go through one on one poll matchups with all of us voting until we came to the winner. So if we get 32 the first week would be a random 16 field matchup, next week a random 8 field match up and so on. If we get 16, just cut it in half.

A tournament system to name the ultimate bad ass of the books.

I'll do the leg work of running it (I'll need a mod's help to sticky a HQ thread and correct any voting mistakes).

I think this would be a blast.

And I put my money on Hotah. :)

If this thread falls flat, I'm never coming back here again. ;)

My nominations:

Bronn
Barristan
Halfhand
Hotah
and
Jaime

1.Robert Baratheon in his prime
2.Arthur Dayne
3.Barristan Selmy (reputedly the best swordsman in his youth)
4.Daemon Blackfyre
5.Jon Snow (Have a feeling he is gonna be amazing, already he has beaten Qhorin and when he went into a frenzy he beat that training partner of his, and it is said he is training every day so he can feel worthy of longclaw)
6.Garlan Tyrell (he obviously is good with the sword, Loras is said to be better with the lance, but in a battle you can only use it once)

Sweet Kiwi!

The idea is everyone nominated is in their respective prime, sober and fighting with their prefered armour and weapon.

I think Hotah could have taken Jaime without blinking.

Do you?

This is very interesting

Strong Belwas, everyone on every board seems to forget him.
Sandor and Gregor Clegane (of course)
Tormund Giantsbane
Mance Rayder (didnt get where he is by winning the lottery)
Euron and Victarion Greyjoy

Im taking it that I cant nominate Sir Duncan ? ;)

and Lame Lothar Frey (the tourney should rightly be opened with an offering to the gods of Frey blood and a bye week for the top seed :) )

Greatjon Umber probably deserves mention.
I'll take the Red Viper though. He fights dirty.

Hi everyone, these are my nominations

1. Red viper of Dorne-he had the mountain beat but he got too self confident if he hadnt been trying to get the mountain to confess he would have won.

2. Khal Drogo-he was the leader of the largest khalazar and he could only have gotten there if he had been good at killing.

3.Jaqen Hagar-hes clearly very good at killing.

and i agree jaime wouldn't stand a chance against hotah

I was just coming back here to nominate Khal Drogo.

I'd also like to put forth Qhorin Halfhand. From Jon Snow's estimation, Halfhand could have killed him very easily.

My money is on Brienne (Collective groan, I know, I know), she's beaten just about every opponent she's met when she's had a *proper* sword in her hands. And she's not so arrogant as to believe she can't be beaten if she lets her guard down.
I would second the Red Viper and Jaime. And Loras as well, if there's a 'lance only' event.

Darkstar.
Whilst he sounds very deadly, it will be hard for him to be true competition, IMO, because we know very little about Darkstar, besides that he's good at cutting up little girls. Likewise for Hotah - we've seen him in action once. OK, he was fighting a KingsGuard knight, but he had longer reach with his pole-axe and Arys was sort of in a frenzy of despair.
So, if we could get GRRM to take time off from ADWD and write a 'what if' scenario, that would be great!

A lot of people seem to be "all about" the Red Viper. To me he was a major letdown. Yes he was defeating a major baddie, but he made a major mental error that led to his disgraceful death. Plus he was using poison. Not so impressed here.

Trey Trey Trey....what kind of warrior would you back? The pious dedicated warrior? or the one who is likely to show up at the tournament with an entourage of hot chicks?

Each character fights with his or her preferred weapons and equipment? If so, then Jaime Lannister (with two good hands) in full armor on a charger with a fourteen foot lance will destroy Areo Hotah like Tony Vercetti riding down pedestrians on the sidewalks of Vice City. Don't mistake Arys for Jaime.

Are characters from the years before the events of ASOIAF available? I'd say no, how can we accurately judge these legendary warriors? (Like we can really judge the current heroes, but that's beside the point.)

And what about characters that are well past their prime, such as Ned and Robert? I'd say leave them out, unless they really stayed in fighting shape, like Barristan Selmy. If Robert and Ned fight, they fight as thirty-eight year old men not twenty-two year old men.

Can the Direwolves and Dragons fight? Hmmmm.

Do the Direwolves and Dragons count as equipment? Dany with three Dragons would be a very tough fight.

Well, that's enough names to do a 64 character tournament, even if you take out the animals.

Thinking outside the obvious - how about Randyll Tarly and Addam Marbrand? They seem about the most capable warriors on the side of the Lannisters. My money would be on Barristan Selmy, though.
