Always and never changing
By now our two heros have managed to reach Dante's dearest friend's home where they can begin to finish the healing that Laurel needs, and help her to begin understanding what is going on, who she is, and who she might become if she chooses to...
Arun bespoke to her own beloved mind to mind as she moved down the hall. ”He paces like a beast in a cage John, think you I should look in on Dante as well?” John, open to all that had transpired was quick to respond. ”Perhaps so, my love. He must rest this night, and for some yet to come if he too is to heal and I think your touch might help calm him, ever have you given comfort to those most in distress.”
She tapped lightly on Dante’s closed door and heard the sound of a chair falling over, likely from the little desk he kept in his room, heard an oath, and the door opened. “Arun, I’m sorry, I tripped, I couldn’t sleep yet.” She stood waiting for him to ask her in or move aside. “Please, come in, you wish to speak to me?” She swept into his room, enjoying the rich green shades that the room held, the healer’s colors and wondered that they did not sooth him in his ire and distress now.
“Sit you down my friend, needs must we speak, if any would sleep this night.” Arun sat and looked pointedly at Dante to follow suit. With a deep sigh of frustration he did but his words came out in a rush, “Did you speak to Laurel as well? Is she comfortable? Of course she must be, this is a most comfortable house in all ways.”
Holding up one hand, Arun cut in on his tirade. ”Dante, you are babbling, you are exhausted, stop it! Keep this up and you will not recover your own reserves no matter what we do to help you. You will not be able to help Laurel or yourself until you stop this. You are not alone in this challenge now, you are home, you are safe, she is safe and any accidental wrongs you have worrying you will be set to right, if you will stop spinning like a top!”
He drew in a deep centering breath, exhaled, breathed in another and another, slowly, deeply and seemed to relax a bit finally. “Good.” Arun had slowed her own breathing with him, willing him to slow his mind, the frantic pace he had kept over the prior weeks to drop like a stone, that they might see the steps of the dance he had woven. He opened his eyes and looked calmly at her, as she waited for him to speak.“I entered her mind first, she had not respond to touch, or sound, so I entered her, I could not ask any but the Gods for permission, she was not there.”
Finally, he spoke calmly now but as one who had watched the healing as much as committed himself to it. “I had no anchor, but what else could I do, barely was there a spark left of her to follow so deeply had she dove to escape, the pain, the cold, what ever it was that frightened her and The Rogue to even follow the path they’d fallen down.”
“But you did find her, did you not, for here you both are, and her body has been healed a great deal, her mind is confused, but she is not maddened.” Arun sat back to encourage him to continue.
“I joined with her not of her will, and told her of my love in her mind, her body did not want to live, I…I wanted to show her that there was reason to come back to live…in my love for her, the flowers that she loves to see blooming, the glory of a fast ride on a bold horse, the laugh of a child and all that she might become if she stayed…I begged her to remember me, to remember who she was before and might yet become if she chose to stay with us, with me…I felt her remember, Arun…I felt her know me…and her love had not died!” His voice broke on that final word, and Arun reached out to touch his hands.
Arun thought hard and spoke slowly. “I think that it is possible, more than likely that you left some of YOU in her mind, and that mayhaps you kept some of her in yours as well. This cannot stand, as well you know. Tis one matter to dwell, of free will in each the other’s heart, or to be of one mind in a matter, but you cannot leave parts of yourself within another and remain balanced. The two will be at war with conflicting memories and thoughts.”
Dante nodded in agreement. “I feel the rightness of your words, but I did not do so with any ill intent to mold her thinking, her feelings for me, I swear Lady, I did not mean to do this thing!”
Arun snorted, “Of course you did not, be not a fool Dante, never would I think such of you! I would imagine you were fearful still as to her state of spirit being and with a major healing yet to attempt upon her body; and to do alone by you! Nay I imagine some part of your spirit remained least she would begin to slip away during the body’s healing work. However did you manage to withdraw at all, considering the long path you had to follow just to reach her mind?”
