a new series just ended called Demonbane. Interesting enough it's strongly influenced by H.P Lovecraft works. There's a oav and a tv series which is 12 episodes. http://www.shinsen-subs.org/

Kurou is a detective that takes odd jobs and hasn't had any luck as of yet. With one phonecall, he's appointed a task to search for a grimoire, a magical book that holds blasphemous info. but holds tremendous power. A grimoire is largely seeked in the underworld, and that's why Kurou is asked to search for it.

Giving up on his search through many libraries, a girl falls from the sky. She's being chased by Black Lodge, an underworld gang. Producing a shield to deflect the countless bullets, she loses all her energy. Kurou manages to pull her away to safety. The girl examines Kurou and finds that he has great potential to be a powerful mage. She makes a contract with him. As the girl (named Al Azif ) and Kurou seem to combine powers, demonbane awakens.

Just found this thread. I hadn't heard of this before now, but that isn't surprising as it isn't really my genre. What did surprise me was that there seemed to be quite a few animes/mangas that have been inspired by Lovecraft's books. I even found an old magazine article on his influences on the anime horror genre. I didn't realise that it was so popular in Japan.

They've released quite a few recent horror animes like Jigoku Shoujo. There's always been a big fan base for this sorta stuff. Demobane was kinda more on the comedy side of things, but was cool to see them summon Cthulhu in it.
