Is anyone else planning to take part in National Novel Writing Month 2006, or NaNoWriMo as it's known? For those who don't know, the aim is to write a 50,000 word novel during the calendar month of November. It's all about quantity over quality, with the basic idea being to get aspiring writers who have always thought they'd never manage to write a whole book to find out that they can!

Anyway, I did it 3 years ago (though I only managed about 30,000 words during the month), but have been busy the last two Novembers. I'm aiming to have a serious go at it again this year.

Anyone else up for writing a novel in a month? If so, the website is www.nanowrimo.org , and you can register now, ahead of the 1 November start.

I thought about it. I found out about it I think mid way through November last year, so it was too late to register for it. It's about 5-6 pages a day, I believe.

As much as I would love to do it, I just don't think I have the time. Work looks like it's going to pick up soon, and that and school doesn't allow much time for writing a short story, much less 50,000 words! :p

Their big thought is quantity over quality. So you could write a completely junk novel, concentrating on number of words mostly. I have a few ideas bouncing around in my head right now, but not enough to really flesh out even a crappy novel!

One of the things I really like about NaNo is that by signing up, you open yourself up to weekly emails from Chris Baty, the totally mad bloke who came up with the idea. They're great - he's particularly good at pointing out to you in the second week that it's not just you who has suddenly realised what a bad idea this is - everyone's thinking the same way! Which makes it a little more possible to keep going ...

I tried it last year.. did one day of writing and then got inspired to go back to writing my main project! So it worked out well for me, but not in the way it's meant to. I've been writing like crazy lately, and I'm also doing professional research projects on the side, as well as normal work, so I consider myself too busy!

I did it last year and didn't quite suceed. I have a fully scripted out novel trilogy idea that I'm going to work on this year. Hopefully, I'll have better luck.

I think i'll have a go at least, i mean, it's worth a try, you only live once rite, and i have all the time in the world, lets get it on, thnx for the post Patrick Mahon

Can't think of a good reason to do it this year...I've signed up in the past and then failed miserably because real life always seems to intrude. The thing is, this year I'm putting all of my research/writing time away from my paying work into a non-fiction project, and while that is going slowly right now, it is going and I don't want to disrupt the flow.

30,000 words...how many pages does everyone think that would be? Can you tell I'm COMPLETELY new?! Haven't really written so much as a shopping list, so if I was in I'm sure it would make for a very interesting experience!!

Ah yes. Well, I suppose if you were talking 10 pt Arial, would you dare to hazard a guess?

Well I'm taking anther shot again this year, even if I fail miserably it's a good incentive to get stuff written!

Well, I'm going to fail, that's sure as hell, but I try to write around 5 or six chapters this month...
