My favourate of the David Gemmell books.

Connovar has to be my favourate charactor, or at least the one I love the most. Then, of course, is Jaim.

(You're gonna have to excuse me on names of people. That is one of my weaknessess, remembering who everyone was. That and spelling.)

It would be nice if David could write a prequl or something....although I know it's not exactly necessary. Something set around the time of Connovar's father, Varacon, and the adventures he had with Rhu..... (agh! See!! Can't remember his damn name) Connovar's step-father.

But still. Connovar and Kaylin are my favourate charactors because we follow them into adulthood. Bane, although I liked him, I didn't feel as close to him because Midnight Falcon starts off when he's around 18.

I also didn't like it how Vorna's son was a bit of a wimp. Well, I thought so anyhow. I would have liked to have seen him more like his father.

I loved the whole theme of the books, and how Stone was very much like our Rome. I also liked how we got to know the......Morriwhatever. The Seith with the crow! I liked how we got to know and understand her throughout the books (well, the first two anyhow.)

Any thoughts??

This series stands out as his best work in my opinion. Far too many strong characters to list off here. I am not sure I liked the concept of Rome and the Gauls, basically plagerised with a simple rename. Seems a little cheap, but did not mar what were excellent heroic tragedies.

I love all the books (though I must read the Lion and the Dark Prince), but do agree this is some of his best work. Personally I liked the last two books, the most. I couldnt connect with Gaise, but all the rest where incredible. The way he makes you rapidly care for his charaters is incredible. Even bit characters like Chain Shada (sic?) or the Cochran Brothers.Or "evil" characters like Huntsekker or The Moidart. I actually feared for characters lives! heheh .Im ranting:eek: , forgive me.

Quick synopsis: The Lion of Macedon and The Dark Prince are about Alexander III of Macedonia. Alexander has a demon inside him and the Greek mercenary general Paremnion who is actually the father of Alexander tries to combat this demon. All the while Alexander III is fast becoming Alexander the Great by conquering the world, though this is mainly due to the tactical prowess of Parmenion. These books use the 'gold nugget' magic theme as seen in many of Gemmell's other works.

In truth Alexander had Parmenion assassinated, after Alexander discovered that Parmenion's eldest son Philotas had plotted treason and was consequently executed.

i think the rigante series is DGs best work. theyre my favourite race of people and ive never felt as close and involved with the characters than i did in these books. Bane is my favourite fictional character in any book, movie or story of all time.

I can't remember but I think I came to Gemmell's work through the Rigante series and they're probably still my favourites, though the Drenai books are pretty good (but range in quality a little). Anyone recommend any of the other books, the one-off or things like the Shannow series (never really appealed to me)?

knights of dark renown is widely regarded as his best book, though i still prefer druss and waylander. as a stand alone its pretty awesome though.

i think the rigante stories ares o good because the characters are just so real on the page. gemmel never shys from showing peoples good and bad sides, and dealing with some harsh issues. For heroic fantasy he is the number one choice!

the jon shannow trilogy wolf in shadow, the last guardian and bloodstone are a great series different to his other books in that it is set in a post apocolypic world were nature had the last laugh and destroied humanity it is set about 200 years after the "fall" radiation covers the earth and humans are trying to return to were they were before and technology has reached the level of the old west although some are more advanced. They also contain the sipstrassi (or daniel) stones which are in the stones of power books and they are a source of magic

Knights of dark renown is considered his best book? Why? I mean, it's a good book, but I don't see what makes it "Better" than any of his other books. The characters aren't as instantly likeable as many of his others (Waylander, Rage, Connavar, Skilgannon)

I liked it, but personally my favourite Gemmell book is a toss up between Waylander and White wolf... (What can I say, a guy messes things up then tries to make amends... maybe it's something to do with my thoughts on absolution.)

I do believe that the shannow books are basically a sequal series to the stones of power books, as they contain several references to some of the characters that were immortal and would have still been around at the fall and maybe even after, I do wonder if they would have just retreated to the 'land of mist' unless similair happenings accured in that alternate reality.
