Attention, fellow Browncoats!

At the risk of providing possible false hope, it appears that there may be a slight ray of hope for a Serenity sequel. Read on:

"After Joss Whedon recently threw in the towel and admitted defeat as far as the continuation of Firefly and Serenity, he is now backpedalling from his statements just a little bit. Seems that his talk about there being “no sequel, no secret project regarding Serenity”, might have given people the idea that a Serenity sequel was not happening. Well what… are you people, nuts??? Whedon made another post on the Whedonesque message board to clarify that he didn’t mean it would NEVER happen, he just meant there was nothing currently in the works. “I will absolutely, posatively [sic] never ever do any kind of Serenity sequel or spinoff unless a studio asks me. Politely. Or meanly, that’s cool too.” Sounds like someone doesn’t want to break the hearts of Browncoats around the world. Joss, stop giving these poor people false hope! It’s not healthy! In other news, Whedon confirmed that Lonelygirl15 has been cast as Wonder Woman. Oh that Joss Whedon… what a kidder."

Yes, no, yes, no, maybe . . . ack! Crazy-making.

So I will continue to buy the movie and the series on DVD and give it to people as presents, and I will continue to talk about Firefly on this board. Make converts. And hope.

Nicely? Walsh is dead. Preacher is dead. Nasty Man whose name I can never remember is alive. Serenity is still falling apart. Nicely? You need to replace your dictionary.

I agree that was not nicely, it was horrible. But still he could come back with a great sequel or a very disappointing one. We will all just have to wait and hope that he will make a sequel.

I thought Serenity was ended perfectly. Sorry, but the death of Wash was needed. It helped add the closure that the Firefly saga needed.

If there's not to be a sequel to Serenity, then it was the perfect ending.

Serenity provided some closure to the Firefly universe if that is Joss's intent (or if he can't get a studio to finance more in that particular 'verse). But there is so much more that can be done. Half a season and one movie by no means tells the entire tale. There is the time between "Objects in Space" and "Serenity" that can be explored, not to mention the time before the Firefly series, and, of course, Serenity 2. Closing the door on this 'verse would be premature IMHO and I hope Joss does get the backing to give us more.

Presonally I think it will ruin the whole thing if he makes a sequal. He just ended Serinity so nicely.

I thought with the characters buying the farm left and right he meant to end the series right there. Serenity pretty much tied up what loose ends the show left open anyway. I like it the way it is. Too much of a good thing gets ugly quickly (just look at The Phantom Menace).

Three words...

Blue Sun Corporation??

What are its goals and plans? Sinister and mysterious no doubt.

Why do its operatives have 'hands of blue'? It always reminds me of Edward Lear's 'The Jumblies'.

Why does River go berserk when she sees their logo?

Why was River being trained as a super-soldier anyway? To fight whom? The war is over.

And then there is Book. He may be dead, but he's still an enigma.

There are plenty of loose ends. Don't forget that this was meant to be a series that would run and run. Threads would have been laid down to unfold slowly over many years.

I think 'Serenity' was great, but it certainly didn't explain everything.

Psychogirl usually I agree sequels are not a good thing, however on this occasion I have to disagree, I think there is plenty of life in Firefly and Serenity. We have so many still unanswered questions. There is plenty of character development left.
A second series would be preferable to a Serenity sequel, but either one is fine by me.

The problem of answering questions is how you achieve it in sensible narrative. Movies have dialogue and action, with the dialogue filling up the gaps in the action, moving it forwards. You'd probably need to condense the important part of a dozen different intended episodes to cover the main answers, if not more. From the dozen or so episodes we do have, it's clear that any answers would have been, quite rightly, drip fed slowly and carefully, keeping us interested. Like the SW prequels, so much exposition that potentially didn't take the plot forward would be awkward, since much of the unanswered questions couldn't be addressed in a way that "helped" the crew directly with the problem that required a film to "document it".
