Hi
I'm doing a course on science fiction, fantasy and horror, and am allowed to invent my own essay title. I've chosen to write about the use of ancient myths and legends within modern fantasy fiction. Haven't really got time to re read all of Gemmell's work, so I was just wondering if anyone who's read anything by him recently could let me know any of his books that are specifically based on/ influenced by any kind of myth or legend. I know that they will probably all have elements of it, but any that are more so than others (apart from the Troy series of course)
Thanks a lot

Dark Prince & Lion Of Macedon are based on Alexander

Rigante novels are based loosely around the Scottish struggle with English oppressors.

and what a div am i. the stones of power early books (last sword of power etc..) are based around the arthurian legend and various other celtic legends.

And without a doubt the Nadir are based on the Mongolian hoards, n did Genghis Khan have violet eyes I wonder??

but thats not really mythology based is it. If you want to see how closely related the nadir and the mongols are then check out Wolf of the plains by conn iggulden due out in january. Its a great bit of historical fiction starts right from the birth of Genghis (temujin)

you might be suprised to learn that all DG's books are based on the same world, there had just been multiple falls (as he called them) where the earth had toppled and the seas swallowed the land and vice versa.

after various conversations with him you could see which nation he used for inspiration, eg: the chiatze were believe the chinese...they drove the nadir out (the same way the chinese expelled the mongols)

I loved the Emperor books although felt the last was rushed a bit?!

As for Ghengis, there is alot of myth surrounding him as it is with famous historical figures!!

i thin k the end of the emperor series was flat because we knew what was going to happen...he was always going to die...when conn has finished the 4 genghis books he said he is going to do a 5th book for the emperor series.

with ghengis / genghis (either spelling right) there is so much room for an author to write as there is so little written history from the mongol people

The Steppes is the givaway there I think plus, although I'm not fully versed in native American history, I don't believe they were ever an aggressive people, just supressed and steadily pushed out of there lands? Whilst the monguls were a scattered race before Ghengis Khan, who united them in an attempt to pillage and conquer more prosperous lands.

David had confirmed that the Nadir were based on the mongols so its not something thats in doubt. he did also confirm some other races as well, but thats being worked into a companion book so i will keep stum about that!

Aha so you have insider knowledge . . . do share here or privately!!! Fave Author of mine and still mourning . . .

David contacted me a few years ago , he said that he like the way i sold his books and the fact that i was an honest trader, also that i had driven up the price of his books (grin)
I got to have quite a few email / PM conversations with him, and met up at a few signings etc..
I have been working on a companion book with another fan for a year or so, (well he has done waaaayyyy more than me...but he has more time on his hands.)
But the publisher may go with an established author instead, like stan Nichols...so it may all come to nothing!..i will still have way more stuff than stan...because we even helped David organise who was who the full time line and family tree etc...

But thats all you get for now!

AAwwww . . . your a lucky man indeed my friend. Where is your bookshop by the way?

its just an online thingy...collectables etc.. www{dot}parmenion-books{dot}co{dot}uk

(nope before i get moded..im not advertising, i have a membership of over 1000 members who get my newsletters (infrequently...im bad at that..but i do get good books {grin}
