I just love them and, of course, they play a major part in my books and are found in the most unusual places.

But where do they come from originally? And (if you've met them) what are their main characteristics? Are more bad than others or vice versa?

Originally? They're a part of many mythologies.

One interesting thing about dragons, in the West we tend to see them as evil, but they bring luck and are good in the East. The most interesting thing about Anne McCaffrey's Pern is that her dragons are good, not evil.

Dragons seem to exist in most mythologies across the world though in different shapes and forms. I've always loved them and have over the years, tried to discover as much as I could about them. The dragons of the East have held the greatest fascination.

The ones I'm most familiar with are the dragons from the East, especially China. For the Chinese the dragon is the King of Heaven. The used to roam the Earth once long ago with all the other mythical creatures. When it was eventually decided that mankind should be allowed to lead their own lives without any help or interference all the rest of the being left Earth, except for the dragons. It is said that they lay down across the earth and eventually became the hills, mountains and rivers. Even today, many people are careful how they build on the land. Structures must be built within the dragon's claws so they will be held up by the dragon and stand the test of time. It's considered a terrible thing to cut through the dragon's body.

The Chinese also have more than one kind of dragon. There are some with four claws and others with five. The four clawed dragons are warriors and are often found placed in corporate offices where they are said to help businesses prosper. Five-clawed dragons were scholars. The five claws worked like a human hand allowing them to write, hold a cup of tea. The Chinese tea Oolong is named for the dragon. Pearls are supposed to be the tears dragons cry when they look upon the suffering of humanity and realise that they can no longer directly help us.

Both the Chinese and Indians have an old legend that a dragon or great serpent will have the ability to live forever and wear human form every 100th generation. There are many tales of families who are said to have dragon, serpent blood in their veins.

That's great Nesa.
Wanted to add something to my thread but will put it here:

This is one of my favourite dragon pictures, I have a massive poster of it on my wall at home and I love it. The way the sun streams in behind the castle is brill!!

I have a book that talks about the origins of both dragons and unicorns, it talks about them as if they really did exist. (which I think they did!!)

Oooohhh Mouse - that's absolutely lovely. The man (a magician I think) and the child look completely awestruck!
