A Vampire Hater's Concise Guide to Vampire Fiction

Haven't read any o' that but I recommend George Martin's Fevre Dream, about a vampire that starts a partnership steamboat business, but for his own reasons. Grand adventure with very well-written characters and yes, the vampires are no sympathy seeking wussies.

I'm intrigued by the author's final statements about the fact that he liked the men's fiction better than the women's. When I first began reading fantasy and science fiction, it was all written by men. I don't know if this was just a matter of there being more men in the genre at the time or if the men's fiction was just better. My point here is that nowadays I find that my favorites are all written by women. That isn't to say that I don't enjoy fiction written by men, just that those that top my list are by women.

I've never liked the Ann Rice type of vampire story. I haven't ever attempted any others besides Chelsea Quinn Yarbro's (which I like) and some other, more modern stuff (by women :) ) so I may have to put some of these guys on my 'To Read' list to at least check them out.
