Series from the 1980's-need help please

There was a series of books (at least 4 or 5 books) from the 1980's that I enjoyed reading. I would love to read them again, but I can't remember the author or the titles. It is driving me crazy. The first book began with a nuclear war and the main character was from Central Florida (Orlando) area. He and a group eventually ended up traveling to distant planets to survive. Does anyone remember these books? I've looked all over the internet and can't seem to find anything.
