When I tried chasing up Martin's recommendations on amazon.co.uk, I ended up choosing about £100 worth of general living mediaeval books - once I get through them I'll recommend the best on the general Writer resources here:

Very useful if you want to create fantasy stories that need background on items that are categorized as occult like Alchemy (The origin of the Philosopher's Stone is there - a subject that JK Rowling touched on in the first book of her famous series).

Info on demons, creatures, practices...stuff like that.
