Hello all. Recently, I got into writing proper, and think I might like a career in it. Either way, I have begun writing a novel. Problem is, early on I've hit a block. I want to write more, but I just can't think of what to write in this little bit, and the lack of progress is killing me.

Any advice of climbing over writer's block?

I don't blocks as such, but I get highs and lows...at some points I can churn out 5 pages a day...and then suddenly for weeks on end I'll have no inclination to write...and the only thing I can do is ride it out, because even if I do try to write anything, the most I'll achieve is a bit of editing or a couple of new paragraphs.

If it's just one little bit you're stuck on, and you know what you want to write after it, then maybe leave it for a while...you might find by writing the bit that follows it, you'll have an idea of what to write.

If your story has just come to abrupt stop, it's best to back away from it for a while...there's always hope though, I had a period like this where I was realyl dispairing over a story, then suddenly about 2:00 in the morning, I had a sudden inspiration and went on the wrote absolutely loads in the following days!

If you're still quite early into your story, and you can't get into it, maybe it's wise to leave it completely...perhaps one day you could go back to it with a fresh outlook, but it's very depressing to be working on something and not getting anywhere...it's best to just walk away and look for greener (and easier :D) pastures!

Just to add to what HoopyFrood has already said, I always finish the bit that I'm writing in the middle of a chapter, even though I still have plenty more to say. That way, I know I'll have something to add when I sit down again. Never finish at the end of the scene you are writing - it can take ages to think of where to start the next bit. Usually, after finishing the bit you started the time before, your mind will already be working on the next chapter. Good luck with your writing and welcome to the Chronicles Sapheron.

Thanks all, past it by starting a little bit earlier and including a bit I wasn't gonna.

Try reading for a few days instead.

Sometimes a block is not a bad thing. It may be that the book is not ready to be born yet -- it's still gestating, not only in your conscious mind, but in the subconscious as well -- and bringing it forth prematurely could be a very bad idea.

There's more to writing than just getting the words on the page, and sometimes the most important part takes place away from your computer.
