Hey guys,

I'm eighteen and I've never really read any comics or graphic novels, but I've been in several RPGs and suchlike, and have always been someone taken with the idea of them, and they look cool. Mainly I've never known where to start, because every time I go to the book shop there's so many I don't know where to start, and I don't really know what I'm looking for.

I don't really like vanilla characters; I like grittier characters that have more of an edge and are perhaps at times morally ambiguous, and I like dark stories. I can't really compare my tastes to anything because as I say I've not really read any, only really seen films based on them (some good, some rubbish!)

So might anyone have an suggestions of what I might like or where to start off? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

Check out the "What should be in my ultimate collection of graphic novels" thread here:

as that poster's tastes also veered towards the gritty. But just to get you started:

Frank Miller: Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, Daredevil, Sin City, Ronin, Elektra: Assassin

Alan Moore: Watchmen, V for Vendetta, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen

Brian Michael Bendis: Torso, Powers, Daredevil

Matt Wagner: Grendel

Ed Brubaker: Sleeper

Brian Azzarello: 100 Bullets

Any number of titles published by Vertigo.
