He is the exact opposite of Melisandre, Ice to her Fire. Perhaps they are not so much priests as avatars?
I don't think much of this CH = Benjen Stark thing, but I'm not GRRM so I don't know. There might be a link to the children of the forest, being as he appeared in the forest, but I like my thought. Anyone else?

I don't know about that. For one thing we really don't know if he even has any connection with the others. I got the impression that he was something apart from them. Also, and I may need to read the description of him again, I thought he was more resembling a wight and not an other.

I know there is a difference, e.g. th others are evil, but that doesn't nescaserily mean that the Other is. Neither Fire nor Ice are good or evil, they just are. Think Viserys / Dany, great / insane. I didn't say he was an other, that connection was made by Melisandre and can we really trust anything she says?

I never really got the impression that the Others were religiously motivated. The only person saying that they even have a god is Melissandre and you could argue she has her own motives for wanting to portray this as some sort of "holy war".

Coldhands is a mystery but he does not seem the same 'race' as the Others, who appear to be like humanoid albinos. The only link Coldhands seems to have is that he has blue eyes and has black hands (like the wights the Others raise from the dead). He may have a connection to the children of the forest but again, their religious beliefs seem quite muted and more like a shamanistic respect for nature (possibly similar to Native Americans or druids?) than the worship of a diety as such.

Actually, Dany heard about R'hlor's eternal war near the end of ASOS. True, the only thing linking them is the Ice/fire thing, but as this is the name of the series i think it is a solid connection.
And how many times must I say i did not call Coldhands an other?
