I just finished A Clash of Kings. I was disappointed that they never actually mentioned Syrio's fate. Or did they? Am I missing something? I seem to remember at the end of A Game of Thrones that, while he did stay to fight against some pretty hefty odds, that they didn't actually say he was killed. I could be wrong. Does anybody know for sure?

Nobody knows for sure because it is unsaid. There are different theories about him (each crazier then other). Look around, they are here, somewhere:rolleyes: Or ask Boaz, he is expert for crazy theories(no offense Boaz, I mean that in a good way;) )

Someone asked GRRM about this at a signing. His reply:

"Draw your own conclusions."

I'm pretty sure he's dead though. He's kickass, but a wooden sword against a Kingsguard in full plate armour? And this wasn't one of the lame Kingsguard either. If he escaped, I'm sure it would have been mentioned.

no offense Boaz

We are to assume Syrio was killed. In the aftermath (weeks and months) of Ned's arrest and the slaughter of the Stark supporters, members of the Small Council discuss what is still left to be done. They discuss the captured (Eddard, Sansa and Jeyne), the dead (Septa Mordane), the missing (Arya), the fled (Renly and Loras), and the potential threats (the bastards and the Antlered Men). Syrio was not mentioned in any of those categories by either Queen, Council or Kingsguard. So, I think if Syrio had escaped, then Cersei would have made a stink about the ineptitude of the White Cloaks. Jmho.

Triple post. Doh!

Mods, please delete these last two posts.

Back to what is quickly becoming my mantra.....

the less Martin mentions them the harder they come back :D

(oh my goodness look out for Benjen)

I don't really think Syrio mattered to anyone in this instance. He was nothing more than Arya's 'dancing' instructor and a little braavosi... True he could have been killed, but even with a wooden sword i can still see Syrio defeating the Kingsguard sent to kill him - or at least fleeing on swift feet after Arya made her escape. No kingsguard could have caught him had he run.

Yes, I can see that. I got the impression he only hung around to help Arya make good her escape.
I expect we'll see a few loose ends that are never 'tied up' by GRRM. I find his books refreshing because they hold up a mirror to reality (more than the majority of contemporary fantasy novels, IMO), and in RL, people and events aren't neat and wrapped up.
And what can Syrio do in the long run, anyway? He's not wealthy, high born or well-known (atleast in Westeros). If he were to re-surface, what effect on events can he possibly have?
He could have returned to Braavos, maybe, and it's conceivable he might run into Arya. But that sounds more like a Jordan plot twist than one GRRM would employ, to me.

Maybe he really is Jaqen Hgar and he changed his face in the dungeon, that's why he showed so much interest in Arya.

All is possible. It would be even logical for a Faceless man to be under cover as a ‘dancing’ instructor while he does his biddings. But we can only hope. Maybe he is now Pate or any man anywhere! Maybe he took Ned Starks place and was decapitated instead of Ned, and Ned is in Bravos!!
I know, I know, that is to much…

This with Ned was posted before:confused:
I was hoping for my own crazy theory(and crazy it is)

No, the Ned one is new-ish. The Syrio = Jaqen thing is old.
Actually, there is a theory that Ned was replaced by a faceless man, but no-one thinks it was Syrio because the few people who think Ned ain't dead also think the same of Syrio.

Maybe Ned is a Faceless Man as well, or he is really a fake, and the real Ned died long ago in the war.

Now THAT's interesting :D.
