Ok,

So, IMO fiction tends to be a medium through which an author may provide commentary on issues of controversial nature in a format that is somehow more palatable for a general audience. I find this empowering, and it inspires me.

Anyhow, I'm just curious as to what other minds think of these topics that I am trying to work into my novel.

TOPICS OF IMPORTANCE

~Sexual Preference & Sexual Identity
~Distribution of Wealth
~Immigration Rights
~Corrupt Politicians

I'd put a poll on here as to which issues people think are most important, but I dont know how yet. Thanks.

For my take, they are all very important issues, and are worth discussing, and certainly usable in fiction -- but I think the problem would be in having an issue you want to discuss before having a story. The issue needs to be inherent in the story, not the other way around (unless the issue sparks what you feel is a good story as story), otherwise, it comes off as being determinedly didactic, and thus rings false within context. But, if these are issues of great concern for you, they're likely to inform your story without any conscious intent on your part. You may become aware of them being there as you go along, and may choose to strengthen one or another of them, but be careful to not let them overshadow the tale you're telling. Aside from that concern: I'd say go for it. The more of him- or herself a writer puts into their work (their worldview, their emotions, their convictions) through honest representation by the characters and incidents of the story (not by preaching at), the better a story tends to be, as that emotional energy powers the writing itself. Just let it come naturally, and chances are it will both make the story better and give the reader food for thought.
