Have you ever been through a phase where you read books by only one author? They're so damn good you can't get enough?
Just coming out of something like that with Richard Morgan, because unfortunately I've read all his stuff:(

Oh, yes. Sometimes I am so absorbed by a particular writer's style and content, or with a particular series, that I read nothing else for a while and then want more even if there isn't any! This has happened to me with HP Lovecraft, Jack Vance, William Burroughs, Jeff Noon, George Orwell, China Mieville (very dangerous to get this way about someone who has only written 4 books yet! Vance was a better deal - the man's bibliography is immense), Martin Amis, Michael Moorcock, Steven Erikson's Malazan Books of the Fallen and most recently, Fritz Leiber's tales of Fafhrd and Grey Mouser.

I thought of starting Steven Donaldson's stuff recently... but then I thought if that turns out to be the same, I won't read another author for several years judging by the size of his books!;)

I only get that way about Raymondy E Feist... As soon as a new one comes out, I have to have it, then get depressed when I've finished it...

HEY HO!!! :D

I too have found some authors style/voice grab me and I can't get enough of their work. I didnt realise for a long time that author's writing is affected by their personalities and it seems I am drawn to some author's style more than others.
I'm not sure I'm explaining this is a clear way, seeing written down makes it sound odd

Not all my favourite authors pull me in like this though. I can still enjoy an authors works, even if they dont grab me the same.

The authors that I really can't get enough of and who's style I so love are -

Jim Butcher
Laurell K Hamilton
Mark Anthony
Tanya Huff
Kelley Armstrong

I have a lot of authors on my favourites list. But these are the ones that I tend to get all the new books as soon as possible and know once I start reading one of their books I havent to have any assignment deadlines or such like because I cant put their books down until I finish them :D

Some have come close though. Chine Mieville is one of those that comes close, if it wasn't for his detailed stories he would be on this list :)

And I'm sure, like others, new authors are being discovered that may also get into my Must Have list :D

I did this when I first discovered David Gemmell, Steven Erikson, Raymond E Feist, Peter F Hamilton, David Eddings (earlier stuff)..erm...I'll stop now :D

just one name...Pratchett...I have read each of his DW books at least four times each, and have gone through a phase where I haven't picked up anything else in months because I'm re-reading the old and then going on to the new...I can see it happening again sometime soon...:D

And Martin is my once a year fetish...I sort of re-read them every so often just to keep my appetite up for the next book...Come on, GRRM...We're still waiting...

for me, finding a good writer is a gem, there is so much out there that is merely blah. when i find one i love, i read everything that i can get my grubby little hands on, then start bugging people to visit my wish list and send me my own copies:D

I don't know if this counts, but I've spent the last 7 weeks only reading Thomas Pynchon. Just 1 book though: Gravity's Rainbow.

William Gibson is the only author I can think of where I start one book and can't help but read more and more after the first.

p.s. What looks like this thread's antithread, 'Books you couldn't bear to finish.', is floating around at the moment. I find it worrying that it has 79 replies to this thread's 8. Does this bode well for the sf/f genres?

Ah!!!!..I see that I share my love for the work of Jim Butcher and his serie on the Dresden Chronicles and also Laurell K Hamilton with you Rune !!!!*s*...

Yep, means SFF readers are selective, yet at the same time they remember not finishing a book. You can expect them to usually finish books.

Frankly, when I toss away a book I've start, if I'm not too busy to read, that means the book IMO is really bad.

I just can't get enough of GRRM and Laurell K Hamilton. I will re-read their respective series' on a very regular basis, and enjoy them just as much every single time.

I like to read the big series, so i end up reading like 10 Wheel of Time books.

Read last Orcs Trilogy by Stan Nichols couldn't put it down. Now i'm on the Sword of Truth series, so read 5 TerryGoodkind and have 3 or so to go.

I was a bit like that with Dean Koontz, reading everything in sight, then eventually got bored of his 'style' of writting and i havent read anything of his in ages. King was the same but i find his writting so good that i always go back after a break. Currently I'm really hooked on Gregory Benford's work.

Kim Harrison
Simon R Green
Jim Butcher
Laurell K Hamilton
Kelly Armstrong.

All books I couldn't put down and ones that have been re read many a time. The Anita Blake books are starting to now fall apart due to overuse :D

My current obsession you might say is with Robin Hobb. I'm currently finishing up the last book of Liveship Traders and plan to immediately move to the Tawny Man series. I'm looking forward to reading about Fitz again, and really enjoy her style of writing.

Robert E. Howard After I read all the Conan stories, I went on to read everything I could find by Him. King Kull, Bran, Man Morn, Cormac art. Solomon Kane. Skull Face , has historical fiction.(Sowers of Thunder was pretty good) . Actiion stories like The Incredible Adventure of Denis Dorgan. I simply couldn't get enough of him.
