Wester Ross is the north-western highlands of Scotland. And on his homepage, Martin is in a photograph before somewhere that looks suspicious like Eileen Donan castle (was used in Highlander, and is near Lochalsh, just before the crossing to the Isle of Skye).

So I'm wondering whether Wester Ross is a big inspiration for Westeros, and whether the geography of Westeros in a Song of Fire and Ice is effectively the Highlands of Scotland going down into an England equivalent?

A thread for the discussion of the geography of Westeros. :)

I looked at some pictures of that area. Wow, that is a beautiful area.:)

I believe that it is entirely possible part of Westeros is based on that area. But I believe Westeros is a bit larger than Scotland and England. If you are interested, here is a link to a map that is an interpretation of the different maps found in the books.http://www.westeros.org/Citadel/Miscellany/Maps00.html
Under Index click on "The World(Tbonest's interpretation)".

True - I'm thinknig of Westeros as basically an analogue of Scotland and England (as if it wasn't obvious :D ) - but the connection to the Scottish Highlands with the name Westeros vs Wester Ross - that has me intrigued. Stark country indeed. :)
