(Probably Found) Help identify title & author

hi, read this short story 30 years ago, I found it quite haunting & It stayed with me ever since - from fickle memory, basic plot is man found dead having broken into electricity sub station & shorted self out on "buss-bars" mystery with (hero) scientist/detective? trying to unravel reason- then more & more people start to do the same in some kind of uncontrollable mass suicides on national scale - breaking into power stations etc. any ideas folks?

That rings a bell, does it go on to involve some sort of malignant force that inhabits the powerstation and attracts people by the buzzing in powercables?
Also, does the blokes wife get killed by her hairdryer at the end?
