i remember reading children books as a child.

the types of stories i'm looking for is ones with morals, lessons learned, good endings. the ones that has a lesson in them. the character learns a lesson.

new books or old as long as it has morals, and lessons.

could you suggest some books and name the moral or the lesson. thanks.

C. S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia," spring to mind. Not only excellent christian teaching, but superb storytelling as well.
(Reading Order) The Magician's Nephew
The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe
The Horse and his Boy
Prince Caspian
Voyage of the "Dawn Treader"
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle

Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising," is a straight good v evil story, with excellent characters.
Over Sea, Under Stone (originally stand-alone)
The Dark is Rising
Greenwitch
The Grey King
Silver on the Tree
Hope this helps. Both series are fairly popular and your local library or bookshop should have no difficulty obtaining copies.

The Magic Books (series of 6 I believe) by Andre Norton, all were originally published in 1970's but have been re-released by Tor and their lessons/morals are still valid for today's kids. And since there are two printings you may be able to find used copies or just get the newer ones. Tor has added reading guides which lead discussions about what the characters learn and why they feel certain ways, etc. A valuable addition I'd say.

Here are a few examples of children's books that teach vaulable lessons - I didn't have any idea what age group you are looking for, so I listed a couple different ones.

A View from Saturday (This is one of all-time favorite books)- 6th grade academic team got together for different reasons, but they all have a lot to offer(Respect/Empathy) age 8 and up

The Watsons go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis -love and strength pull family through horrible rasict church bombing.(Fortitude/Strength)10 and up

Bud, not Buddy - orphaned Bud is looking for his father, with his sunny disposition and positive attitude, he finds more than anyone bargained for. (positive thinking/hope)ages 9 and up

Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh by Robert O'Brien - In her quest to save her son from the garden tiller, Mrs. Frisby befriends the sometimes frightening Rats of Nimh (Courage and Valor) 8 and up

The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein - the consequences between man and nature of always giving or taking- can it make you happy?(self-sacrifice) 3 and up

A Bad Case of Stripes - little girls love lima beans but doesn't want anyone to know - guess the cure when she come down with a bad case of stripes. If only she had never succombed to peer pressure ( Be yourself/independent) ages 5 and up

I absolutely adored The Phantom Tollbooth when I was younger. I don't remember if there was a moral lesson, exactly, but Juster is so great with using words ...

My favorite book as child!! I loved this story. There are definitely lessons to be learned from it. Mostly about being an active part of life or it will pass you by. Then there's wise use of language, politeness, obeying rules...lots of good stuff in there. Hmm. I think I may have to read it again :)

I might join you in that dwndrgn- an absolute classic of literature that I think every kid should read. It really shows you just how important an imagination can be!

And then Rhyme & Reason can reign again!

The Rescuers / Miss Bianca / The Turret by Margery Sharp were three of my favourites, teaching that friendship and loyalty can overcome any adversity.

Bruce Coville's Magic Shop books all have a lesson in them, usually about the value of friendship, respect, courage and growing into yourself.

The books in the series are:
Jennifer Murdley's Toad
Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher
Juliet Dove, Queen Of Love
The Monster's Ring
The Skull of Truth

Coville also put together two collections of short stories entitled Oddly Enough and Odder Than Ever. Both contain amazing stories and they all have something to teach.

For the more advanced kids, there are loads of YA books out there with good morals behind them (come to think of it, all of my favorite fantasy authors tend to throw in a moral or two if you just look for it). There's another series being re-released for YA, authored by Herbie Brennan and starts with Faerie Wars - lots of good stuff in at least the first book, haven't read the others as yet.

Depending upon the age of the reader, there's always The Little Engine that Could!

I'd like to suggest the graphic novel "GAAK". It's 50's style scifi like "The Invaders from Mars" mixed with 80's Spielberg like "The Goonies", "ET", and Close Encounters", with a dash of Tim Burton's "Mars Attacks" for flavor. It's the story of an invasion of a small town called Eden'sVille by kooky aliens who set out to conquer the earth and meet the original cast of "Star Trek" and the four misfit kids named Zach, Jemmy, Plato, and Chubs who set out to stop them. It's good old fashioned creature feature fun. Great for kids and scifi fans 8 to 80 who grew up watching Chiller Theatre, Creature Features, and the old "4:30 Movie". LOL.

If anything, GAAK is a story about friendship. The kids support eachother against all the trials and tribulations of being a kid: bratty little brothers, snotty big sisters, bullies, disbelieveing adults, not to mention aliens from outer space. Here's a link to the book on Amazon:
