Here’s a little snippet of my writing style. I haven’t developed this idea any further than this, it’s just something I thought of and jotted down. Any comments at all are appreciated, criticise away!
A bit of background info: The narrator is a girl, about sixteen years old, who was taken from her family to join The Lineage when she was about four.
The Lineage
I don’t know my real name, where I grew up, if I have any brothers or sisters or what my first word was. For as long as I can remember I have lived in isolation with The Lineage. They are my only family I know, the only memories I can recall. Well, not the only memories. There is one, I must have been two or three but it’s so clear in my mind that it could have happened last week. I am running, faster and faster, and there’s a female voice encouraging me, telling me I can do it. Suddenly I’m in the air, I’m bloody flying.
When I first came here it didn’t take them long to realise that my ‘special features’ would need to be taken care of. I was dosed with strong drugs everyday for two years. I quickly learned not to struggle; I only made it worse for myself. There was pain at first – the two partings in the middle of my back slowly sealing themselves was unbearable – but now there are only two scars, the size of fingers, left where my wings used to be.
No-one here is ‘normal’. Some of them can walk through walls, blend into the background, and transport themselves from one place to another. No-one else is able to fly. I was all alone in my talents. Since I came here twelve years ago I have made few friends. However many teenagers here from many friendships, and relationships. Quite a lot of teenagers here, the same age as me, weren’t taken away from their real families. They were born into this life, created by the passion of two of the people here. They like this, and encourage it. The more of us the better, I suppose.
