Upcoming Conventions

I would love to go to Worldcon in Glasgow but lack the money, the time and the reason. Perhaps all of those things will change. I am not certain what I get for my £100 admission? I have family in Glasgow, so accomodation will be no issue....

Interesting. LosCon isn't on the list. It isn't like it is a small con. I wonder if there's some sort of political thing going on? I've heard enough gossip the times I've been to LosCon, and especially the year I did some volunteer work there, that those sorts of squabbles do go on. Hmmmm.:)

Dammit. When I saw the whole Glasgow thing, I got all excited and started counting on my fingers, my money worth (not much) and wondering how I'd persuade my parents to loan me some, and let me go to Glasglow, though the £110 whack was quite something.

Then I saw the date... June. GCSE exams start in about 3 weeks, and I'll have no time...- anyone like to bust me out of school?

You have given me a ray of hope in a dismal life! Maybe it is in August and I have merely misread the times... now you Ink Stained Wretch if you lie you will suffer the consequences of my mighty wrath!

Why thank you! I appreciate the link and the information, it is much needed.

I'd also point out, for Caladan and Lacedaemonian especially, that you won't have to have a membership to attend some of the events, especially the parties which take place outside the main venue (sorry Kevin, I know this isn't doing your membership sales any good ;)).

In particular, the BwB party I'm plugging below won't need a membership to attend: neither will most of the other events I'm involved in. I know some folks Cal knows will be at these...

Now that is lucky *laughs evil laugh* Hopefully I'll meet some people I know or something, otherwise it'll be boring

I should also point out that day passes will be available, if you really want to attend some of the sessions. Really, your main cost will be accommodation: and if you can stay with a friend or relative, there's no excuse for any UK fan not being there. ;)

It's not as if we get a WorldCon often. :(

*Shrug* If someone can't afford the membership, they aren't going to be able to attend anyway, so I try not to get too worked up about off-site events open to non-members.

However, there are less expensive ways to get a membership if you act now. People who bought memberships a couple of years ago when it was relatively inexpensive but are now deciding they can't attend have been putting their memberships up for sale. One of the best places for looking for memberships for sale is the Interaction LiveJournal, where, for instance, yesterday as I write this, someone put up a membership for sale for only US$100.

Not that the convention doesn't need the money -- putting on a Worldcon is a horribly expensive proposition. The Worldcon I co-chaired in San Jose in 2002 had a gross turnover of just under US$1 million, with the largest percentage of it coming from membership revenue. (Painful details available on the SFSFC web page if you're curious.) And as I understand it, the Scottish Exhibition and Convention Centre costs even more to rent than the >US$200,000 we spent to rent the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. OTOH, the SECC is a good facility, and the Clyde Auditorium (Hugo Awards Ceremony, Masquerade, and the Friday Night Play) looks very nice from the audience's point of view.

I should be attending the Motor City Comic Con, next weekend, if all goes well. Here's a link to the list of guests www.motorcityconventions.com/motor_city_comic_con/guests.html. Unfortunately at the bottom of the page are some major guest cancellations, including Brent Spiner and David Carradine.
I'm looking forward to meeting Melvin "my Kung Fu is the best" Frohike, played by Tom Braidwood, on the X-Files and The Lone Gunmen.

Believe me, Glasgow is a lot closer to Cumbria than it is to Daventry! Go on, Rune - you know it makes sense. Take a couple of days out to go to Glasgow.
