There is quite a drop off from 2.5M to about 1M (although it is consistantly BBC3's highest ranking show). Is that a standard pattern? I wander how it compares with say Doctor Who?

I'm not surprised the ratings dropped for the Christmas Eve episode - the previous episode was one of the worst. I think it was the dead guy with the alien eye.

There are at least two episode missing, though - the two-part finale.

Haven't a clue about the Dr. Who ratings, but I expect they'll follow a similar trend from high at the beginning, dropping throughout the series, and perking up for the final two episodes.

EDIT: The two-parter is on the site:

BBC3 w/e 07/01/2007
1 TORCHWOOD (Sun 2130) 1232

When it comes down to it, though, the BBC aren't meant to be concerned with ratings - they have the licence fee, so they're not competing to attract advertisers.

They've lost £2billion recently for something or other, and the government refuses to give them more funding.

Two words, though: Planet Earth.

No other channel in England has anything that can be mentioned in the same breath as Planet Earth. I don't know Australian or American TV, but I'm guessing that neither do they.
