Seeking info on genetics and the human genome.

After having the briefest flash of inspiration for a possible story, I discovered I knew almost nothing about what it concerned: genetics and the human genome. So I thought I'd ask in here for a little guidance as to where to start reading. As I'm not particularly bright, I'm looking for books that are fairly accessible and easy to comprehend. I'm specifically interested in the locating and identifying of genes and what they do. I've done a little reading online, and I'm also intrigued by the idea of 'jumping DNA'....
