I have had one but I have also been one to a few. Curious of other folks stories.

My biggest groaner to my Mentor was probabaly 1/3 into a Storm of Swords was: " I think Lisa Arryn may be a bit more clever than she plays herself to be." My mentor gave me a knowing smile and spoiled nothing..... yeah, I was, um wrong (re:Jon Arryn's murder).

My favorite wrong from those i have introduced was the theorey that Tyrion exists as Renly's foil.

My Favorite insight was : Cat not being able to cross the bridge (Snow) with Mya Stone and how that relates to her relationship with Jon Snow in the first 500 pages of AGOT.

Maybe this thread is a bit weird but, hey more threads are always fun. :)

Cheers

Yeah, not really sure what to make of this one?
By 'mentor' you basically mean someone who read the book before you and told you about it/discussed it with you?
In that case I don't have one. I 'discovered' these books on my own recognisance when A Game of Thrones first came out (indeed I nearly fell off my chair when I got it signed by GRRM told me I had a 1st edition and that, even with the wear and tear, they were retailing at $70-100 a pop - worth more to me, even more so now it's personally signed) and the first discussions I had about them are pretty much on here, all my friends being fantasyaphobic when it comes to reading.

Interesting about Cat on the Snow bridge but I always read that as just being terrified of going onto a slippy surface with a thousand mile drop - no doubt she'd have had similar problems in Pyke.

My favourite wrong theory is that Gendry was going to play a much more important part in this series than he seems to now be destined for. Both Edric Storm and he have no real part to place in this story which threw me a little. Just another way GRRM bucks the stereotypes - no orphan farmboy to king rise in this novel! :)

Yes, by mentor I meant one who introduced me to the books.

Yeah the one who drew the snow connection is a literature proffessor, looking at it from a different angle I suppose.

Like Winters, I discovered these books on my ownsome, so no mentor. And despite my many and repeated urgings, I have not succeeded in convincing anyone to read these books. My lone friend who reads fantasy is waiting for them all to come out, which is infuriating me no end!

Really, i got the feeling Gendry would become important later on when Arya comes back to Westeros, as for Edric, i think he will be legitimised and become the next Stormlord. After all the Baratheons are growing thin.

No mentor here.............all by my lonesome I found the first book screaming to me from a shelf at Chapters. I read the cover and had to buy it. I must say that it sure brings a realism to the books without any overt " sorcery" involved( ie :- balls of fire , chanting, etc....). Of course, being a "fantasy " series, it's going to be there in some form.
Littlefinger seems to perform magic all the time with all his .........shall we say..........manouvering of the pieces?

I love the books and have just now suggested to my children ( 14 &16) that they would probably enjoy them. So "mentoring" is in the works!

My axe............quickly!

I had a mentor -- Wiggum -- as I probably wouldn't have picked out the books on my own, or at least not until I'd read all the hype here and at another site. Wiggum raved about these books, and I ended up winning AGOT in a haiku contest. I wish I had friends who read like I do; I'd like to continue the heritage!

Ah, Padawan, you have learned your way well.

I was surprised that Josh had picked them up, lol.

My mom bought me the first book knowing it got rave reviews and that I loved fantasy. So I undertook the long journey alone and unguided.

I've convinced several people to read it, especially on the site StormyP and I help run, and a couple in real life.

More of a propogandist than a mentor though.
